Italian Serie A 2017/18 Preview with Tancredi Palmeri & Matteo Bonetti | Juventus, AC Milan & more

Milan's spending Before Paris Saint-Germain signed Neymar, the biggest story of the summer was how Milan were spending at a rate not seen since Roman Abramovich became Chelsea owner in 2003. The scale of the investment -- €215.5m -- and its targeted nature has lent credibility to the project even though doubts remain about exactly how much of the money is president Li Yonghong's and whether Milan's business plan is compliant with Financial Fair Play. Still not done in the transfer market, the standout pieces of business will remain the signing of Leonardo Bonucci from Juventus and the contract extension for goalkeeping wunderkind Gianluigi Donnarumma. A sleeping giant is rousing from its slumber. For the first time in six seasons Serie A will have four Champions League spots up for grabs. Juventus aside, that owes more to politicking than merit and Agnelli is already worried that, if the other Italian sides don't start pulling their weight, Ligue 1 will do what the Bundesliga did in 2011 and take it off them. Until then, greater access promises to be a game-changer for Italian football. Inter and Milan's decline has in part come because they have been starved of Champions League revenue although, even had four-team qualification been in place over the last six years, they wouldn't have always qualified. But the stakes are higher this year. Who will win the league? Juventus' rivals are sniffing blood but the champions have sold multiple big-name players in other years -- most notably 2015 -- and still won the title. They remain favourites but, if the crown slips, Napoli look best placed to take it from them. Unlike last year, they've kept their best players and just need to pick up where they left off. Naturally Milan are being billed as contenders but it remains to be seen if an entire new team can come together quickly enough to join the title race. Inter have had a fantastic preseason and, after underperforming last year, are perhaps not being taken as seriously as a Luciano Spalletti team should be. Spalletti already looks to have knocked them into shape and they're close to completing an already-talented squad with some astute, if low profile signings. Meanwhile, Roma may have changed too much to contend, although the hope is Eusebio di Francesco will make the same leap in his coaching development as Allegri and Maurizio Sarri did when they went from Cagliari and Empoli to Milan and Napoli respectively. Fresh from winning the Super Cup, Simone Inzaghi's Lazio also don't look like fading away despite losing Lucas Biglia, and in all probability, Keita Balde Diao. Source: espnfc

Brighton vs Manchester City 0-2 | Post Match Analysis with Andy Gray, David Moyes & Chris Coleman

12/8/2017 English Premier League 2017/2018 Brighton & Hove Albion FC vs Manchester City 0-2 Brighton 0-2 Man City Presenter: Richard Keys beIN SPORTS 11 Premier League title favourites Manchester City had to wait to break down promoted Brighton before two late goals gave them victory on the south coast. The Seagulls, back in the top flight after a 34-year absence, had showed impressive organisation and resolve to keep City at bay until David Silva played in Sergio Aguero to fire home after 70 minutes. Lewis Dunk headed Fernandinho's cross into his own net five minutes later to make sure of the points for Pep Guardiola's new-look side. Brighton, who had just 22% possession, spent most of the game defending in their own half but had chances with the score at 0-0. Shane Duffy had a shot deflected just wide and, after City's new £35m goalkeeper Ederson flapped at the resulting corner, Dunk had two shots blocked in quick succession. That was as much of a test as City's backline got, and they never looked in serious danger of suffering an opening weekend upset in the manner of some of their title rivals. This was was more of a test of whether Guardiola's rebooted team could break down a massed defence. They did not do it enough in his first season at City but at the Amex Stadium, eventually, they found a way through. New personnel meant a change to a 3-1-4-2 formation for Guardiola, something he tried during his side's recent tour of the United States. It was hard to gauge an accurate impression of City's new shape because Brighton sat so deep in their own half and saw so little of the ball. Even so, the signs are that City are still adjusting to it themselves. Kyle Walker and Danilo, signed for a combined £68m over the summer, did exactly what they were supposed to do as wing-backs - constantly getting forward and overlapping down the outside. All too often, though, their runs were ignored and City played the ball inside, where space was limited, before attacks broke down. Width was the way forward for City, however, and moves along the right flank provided both their goals. Dale Stephens' mistake allowed Walker to start the attack that led to Aguero scoring, while Fernandinho provided the cross that Dunk put into his own net. Brighton are away at Leicester next Saturday (15:00 BST) then go to Watford the following weekend. Their next home league game is not until 9 September, when West Brom are the visitors. City's first home game of the new season is against Everton on Monday 21 August (20:00) before they return to the south coast to play Bournemouth the following weekend. Source: BBC

Watford vs Liverpool 3-3 | Post Match Analysis with Andy Gray, David Moyes & Chris Coleman

12/8/2017 English Premier League 2017/2018 Watford 3-3 Liverpool Presenter: Richard Keys beIN SPORTS 11 The Reds, without Barcelona target Philippe Coutinho due to a back injury, fell behind to Stefano Okaka's header. Sadio Mane equalised with a clinical finish only for Abdoulaye Doucoure to restore the lead from close range. Roberto Firmino's penalty made it 2-2 before Mohamed Salah thought he had won it only for Britos to equalise. In Jurgen Klopp's 100th competitive game as Reds boss, Liverpool wasted a string of chances before Uruguay defender Britos headed over the line from close range. Watford keeper Heurelho Gomes, who conceded the penalty after hauling down Salah, denied Alberto Moreno with a fingertip save. Joel Matip also hit the bar and Dejan Lovren forced another good save from Gomes as the Reds dominated the closing stages until Watford's late leveller. The six-goal thriller came on the back of Friday's opening match of the 2017-18 campaign which produced seven goals as Arsenal beat Leicester 4-3. New season, same old Liverpool It was a case of new season but same old Liverpool on the opening day of the campaign. As good as Liverpool were at going forward, their defensive frailties - which arose time and again last season - came back to haunt them. Klopp's side were behind after failing to defend the first corner of the match, unmarked Italian striker Okaka allowed to power home Jose Holebas' delivery. In the space of 161 first-half seconds, Liverpool went from outstanding at one end of the pitch to atrocious at the other. They equalised with a sumptuous finish by Mane, the Senegal forward collecting a lovely flick by Emre Can before scoring from an angle. It was Liverpool's first serious attack of the game yet moments later they were trailing again after more awful defending. The Reds' defence made a hash of trying to clear Tom Cleverley's low ball across the box and Doucoure slotted home from five yards - his second goal since joining Watford from Rennes in 2016. A clumsy foul by Gomes on Salah allowed Firmino to make it 2-2 from the spot before the Brazilian turned provider with a delicious lob which enabled Salah, a £34m signing from Roma, to put his side ahead on his league debut. It should have been the winner yet Liverpool's defence failed to deal with another Holebas corner, allowing Britos to score three minutes into added time. Battling Watford show spirit under Silva Watford were minutes away from losing a seventh successive Premier League match before Britos had the final say in Marco Silva's first league game in charge of the Hornets. Seven of the side that started against Liverpool were part of the side that crumbled 5-0 at home to Manchester City on the final day of last season. Yet the Hornets produced an encouraging performance under their new Portuguese manager which suggests they could finish higher than 17th in 2016-17. Midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah was the only one of Silva's six summer signings to start- club record £18.5m buy Andre Gray beginning life on the bench and coming on in the second half.
