Politics: Anambra guber: Oseloka Obaze defeats Ubah, others, emerges PDP candidate

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has elected a diplomat and former Secretary to Anambra State Government, SSG, Mr Oseloka Obaze as its candidate for the Anambra governorship election which comes up November 18.

Obaze was announced elected by the Governor Dave Umahi who conducted the election with his Awka Ibom Counterpart, Emmanuel Udom.

He polled 672 votes to beat the duo of Dr Alex Obiogbolu and Mr Ifeanyi Ubah who scored 190 and 94 votes respectively. Two votes were declared invalid.

Of the seven aspirants running on the party’s platform, four had pulled out of the race.

While Prof Ufodike announced his withdrawal without reason, pledging to support any of the aspirants that emerged, Prince John Emeka, a former minister had hours before the election withdrawn from the race, citing alterations in the delegates list of the party as reason for his action.

Two women who were also in the race, Senator Stella Oduah, a serving senator and former Aviation minister and Hon Linda Ikpeazu, a serving member of the House of representatives, backed down.

Obaze’s election came after over two weeks of high power politicking, characterised by intrigues among top politicians in the state, including former governor of the state, Mr Peter Obi, who is believed to have an anointed aspirant among the seven that contested for the ticket of the party.

Politics: Fashola Shuns Lagos LG Poll

Politics: Fashola Shuns Lagos LG Poll

Former Governor of Lagos State and Minister of Works, Housing and Power, Babatunde Fashola did not vote on Saturday at Lagos’ Local Government election held across the state.

The former governor was conspicuously missing at Ward G3, Unit 002, State Senior Grammer School, Itolo, where he normally vote.

People are worried that the former governor did not show up to mobilise his constituency to vote massively for the All Progressives Congress, APC, as he normally did when he was in power.

Some APC stalwarts feel that the former governor ought to have led by example by showing up in Lagos to cast his vote as other top leadership of the party did.

Even the National leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, who was believed to have travelled out came back to cast his vote at his Polling Unit 047, Sunday Adigun Street, Alausa, Ikeja, while Governor Akinwunmi Ambode also voted at his polling unit in Epe.

Octogenarian and first Civilian governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande despite his constraints came out to vote at the council election, braving the heavy downpour.

Party faithful are of the view that as a minister representing Lagos State at the Federal Level and also representing Lagos at the Federal Executive Council, FEC, the former governor’s absence at his polling unit was inexcusable, while questioning his love for the state.

It would be recalled that Fashola did not show up at any of the event organised by the Ambode administration to celebrate Lagos State at 50, an event that attracted all past governors of the state still alive, other serving governors from other states and even Chief Bode George, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Efforts to reach Hakeem Bello, spokesperson to the minister to know why his boss did not come to Lagos to vote proved abortive as several calls made to his phone were not picked.

The APC Party Agent, Mr Adewale Adelana, said that the outcome of the election reflected the decision of the people of Oshodi/Isolo on who to lead them.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that party agents of the APC and LP signed the result sheet after declaration while the agent of the PDP was nowhere to be found.

The collation centre – LASIEC Office in the council Secretariat – was peaceful as security men were on ground to secure electoral officers and materials.

Collation is still ongoing in some other council areas for the chairmanship and Councillorship polls held on Saturday across the 20 LGAs and 37 Local Council Development Areas in the state. (NAN)

An early morning downpour and voter’s apathy yesterday had hampered the commencement of the election at 8am as proposed in the 20 local governments and 37 Local Council Developments Areas (LCDAs).

It was an anti climax to months of painstaking preparation by the Justice Ayotunde Phillips (retired)-led State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC).

The rain and the attendant flood in parts of the state prevented electoral officials from reaching their duty posts on time.

Thus, accreditation and voting which were supposed to commence at 8am began much beyond the scheduled time and only when the rain subsided.

Besides, many registered voters chose to stay indoors.

Only a few bothered to go out and vote except in areas where opposition parties tried to have a foothold.

They include Mushin, Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye, Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Ojo, Coker Aguda, Itire-Ikate, Agboyi-Ketu, and some parts of Ikorodu.

Youths turned the roads to temporary football ‘pitches’.

Some party officials attributed the low turnout to inadequate electoral awareness by the LASIEC.

But Justice Philips dismissed any such suggestion, saying adequate publicity was carried out.

She admitted that these was delay in the commencement of the elections in some areas, which said was caused by rain.

She told reporters at Old Yaba Road while monitoring some polling units the area that the rain affected the movement of electoral materials.

She said all eligible voters would be allowed to exercise their right as there were enough materials.

“We are addressing the situation and we are assuring that everybody in the affected areas will vote once people have been accredited and are on the queue, they will be allowed to vote even after 3pm,” she said.

She expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conduct in most areas.

Phillips said there were a few cases of violence but said security agents had quelled the situation.

Lagos State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain Segun Adewale blamed LASIEC for ‘disappointing’ Lagosians.

He said the late arrival of voting materials discouraged some people from voting after waiting for hours at the polling station for voting materials to come.

He also accused supporters of the ruling APC of harassing people.

“People were harassed by members of the ruling APC, my own sister was beaten up and people could not vote before the end of the exercise,” he claimed.

Kebbi State House of Assembly Deputy Speaker Buhari Ailero, who led Election Observers from other states, hailed the peaceful conduct of the poll.

Ailero confirmed that the election materials were distributed on time to the polling units.

He urged political parties to do more in mobilizing voters in subsequent elections.

N23 Billion Diezani bribe: INEC writes Buhari over RECs indicted by EFCC

N23 Billion Diezani bribe: INEC writes Buhari over RECs indicted by EFCC

The Independent National Electoral Commission has written to the Presidency over the indictment of some Resident Electoral Commissioners for alleged corruption by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The INEC National Commissioner in charge of Publicity and Voter Education, Mr. Solomon Soyebi, told newmen on the telephone on Monday that the commission decided to write the Presidency about the indictment of the RECs because it had little control over them.

According to him, the commission cannot do anything about the cases involving about four RECs because they were appointed by the President.

Soyebi did not, however, mention the names of the RECs indicted by the anti-graft agency for their alleged role in the distribution of N23bn, which allegedly emanated from a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, during the build-up to the 2015 elections.

Funds were traced to about 202 INEC officials including the RECs.

Soyebi, who is also the INEC National Commissioner in charge of the South-West, said it would be appropriate to get the status of the cases involving the affected RECs from the EFCC which investigated them.

He said, “Honestly, it is the EFCC that can answer that. They (the RECs) were appointed by the President; we didn’t appoint them. So there is little control we can have over them.

“What we did was to write to the Presidency to notify it of a particular number of RECs that the EFCC told us they had cases against.

“About three or four RECs are involved, but I am not too sure. I don’t know their names off- hand.”

He added that the cases involving the 202 officials of the commission, who were indicted for allegedly receiving part of the N23bn bribe, were still being investigated and reviewed by the commission.

“The statement we gave on them last week is still the same about their status, that investigation is still ongoing,” he added

The EFCC had, in October last year, submitted a report to INEC regarding the over 200 electoral officials who allegedly received part of the $115m (N23bn) allegedly disbursed by Diezani.

The report was said to have contained the outcome of investigations and recommendations.

Some of the officials returned over N300m while houses were recovered from some of them.

EFCC sources said two houses and two plazas had been recovered from the REC in Rivers State during the 2015 elections, Gesila Khan, while her accounts had been frozen.

According to impeccable sources at the EFCC, Khan received N185.8m ahead of the March 28 and April 11, 2015 elections.

Another REC in Abia State, Sylvester Ezeani, allegedly received N20m but is said to have returned the money to the EFCC.

The source also revealed that the EFCC had arrested one Fidelia Omoile, who was the INEC electoral officer in the Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State.

Apart from tracing over N112.4m to Omoile, the commission also recovered some sensitive electoral materials during a search on her apartments in Edo and Delta states.

The commission also arrested one Oluchi Brown, who was the INEC Administrative Secretary in Delta State. She allegedly received over N111.5m.

Further investigations by detectives revealed that Brown had about $75,000 in an account in the United States.

The anti-graft agency also arrested one Edem Effanga, a retired INEC official. Effanga was arrested alongside his alleged accomplice, Immaculata Asuquo, who is the Head, Voter Education of INEC in Akwa Ibom State.

Effanga was alleged to have received over N241.1m which he shared among INEC ad hoc workers during the last elections.

Also in Gombe State, 11 electoral officers, who supervised elections in the state during the 2015 general elections, admitted to receiving N120m out of the N23bn.

Some other officials indicted were Godwin Maiyaki, Gambo Balanga, Bukar Benisheik, Dukku, Jibril Muhammed, Billiri, Dunguma Dogona, Funakaye, Mohammed Wanka, Kaltungo, Ishaku Yusuf, Kwami, Suleiman Isawa, Babagana Malami, Shongom and Nuhu Samuel.

Attempts to speak with the spokesman for the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, on Monday, proved abortive as his mobile indicated that it was switched off.

However, a reliable source in the EFCC said the commission had done its job and it was waiting for a response from INEC.

“As you know, we have submitted our report to INEC and the electoral body has its internal mechanism for dealing with errant officials.

“Once INEC has concluded its investigation and given us its report, we will take action,” the source said.

Senator Andy Uba dumps PDP, defects to APC

More reactions trail Nnamani’s defection to APC

Senator Ken Nnamani

Some chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South East have described the defection of a former Senate President, Ken Nnamani, to the party as a `welcome development’.

The APC chieftains, who spoke in separate interviews with newsmen on Tuesday in Enugu, said that the gale of defections by South East politicians to the ruling party was good for the zone.

Mr Osita Okechukwu, Director-General, of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), said the APC welcomes with open arms the political bigwigs who had found it worthy to identify with the progressives.

Okechukwu, however, called for caution in order not to admit those who participated in dislocating and subverting the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

“My fear is that those who have excess baggage may also wittingly or unwittingly infect the APC in Enugu State with such anti-democratic and less than transparent tendency,” he said.

Okechukwu described Nnamani as `a politician with high integrity’ who worked hard to reorganise his former party and also stood firm against the infamous third term bid of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

The APC Chairman in Enugu State, Chief Ben Nwoye, said the defection of the former senate president was a clear indication that the party was on ground in the state.

Nwoye said that the APC needed men of integrity such as Nnamani to capture states in the zone, adding that it would be a different story in the next general elections.

“We are galvanising the people of the state to embrace APC; they know that their votes have never counted.

“I am glad we have dismantled the rigging machine of other parties,’’ said the APC chieftain.

Nwoye said that the APC is a party for Nigerians and not for the Northerners or Muslims as people were made to believe during the 2015 elections.

According to him, the APC suffered campaigns of calumny in the South East ahead of the 2015 election.

He said that with the entrance of Nnamani and former Abia governor, Orji Uzor Kalu, the party would capture the South East.

A former member of the House of Representatives from Abia State, Chief Acho Obioma, said that time had come for the zone to take its proper place in the political scheme of things in the country.

“No meaningful development had happened in the South-East and South-South under the PDP and before the end of 2018, the zones would have seen massive infrastructural development under the APC.

“Our people will now see a reason to embrace our party because we do not like to be in the opposition.

“I believe that the scenario that played out during the last election will not repeat itself,” he said.

Obioma said that the turnout of people in the ongoing registration of members by the APC was a clear indication that the zone was ready to embrace progressive ideas.

Meanwhile, Prof Aloysius Okoli, of the Department of Political Science, University of Nigeria, Nsukka said that the defection of Nnamani and Jim Nwobodo to the APC was rooted in pursuit of personal interest.

According to him, their defection would have little or no impact as far as politicking is concerned in Enugu State.

“I believe that their defection to APC is for them to be in the news, so that people could see and hear them,” Okoli said.

Nnamani on Sunday officially announced his defection to the APC in his country home, Amechi in Enugu South Local Government of the state.

APC lures former Kebbi governor, PDP chairman

APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kebbi, has commenced moves to lure two prominent members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the party.

Alhaji Sani Hukuma, a chieftain of the APC, and chairman, Kebbi State APC elders’ forum, made the disclosure on Friday in Birnin Kebbi while addressing newsmen.

He said that the leadership of the party is making efforts to lure Alhaji Saidu Dakingari, the former governor and Alhaji Musa Dan-Illela, PDP state chairman to defect to the APC.

“Yes, I led a delegation to the state chairman of the PDP; he organised an unprecedented dinner to welcome us to his house.

“We are still consulting the former governor Alhaji Saidu Dakingari to join our fold in order to move the state forward.

“As soon as the consultation is over, the opposition is over in Kebbi,” he said.

Hukuma said that Alhaji Atiku Bagudu, the incumbent governor, supported his predecessor during his (Dakingari’s) two terms in office.

“Some hypocrites, who were bent on ensuring that the state is not united, caused the misunderstanding between them by spreading unfounded rumour,” he said.

The APC chieftain commended President, Muhammadu Buhari for appointing an indigene of the state, Alhaji Abubakar Malami as Minister of Justice.

He described the minister as a “man of honesty and integrity.’’

“Malami is a man who is respected throughout the country; he is patriotic and loyal to traditional leaders.

“He is not corrupt and has dedicated his time to his profession. Buhari made a good choice by appointing him minister.

“We support the President’s decision and we will vote for Buhari should he decide to contest in 2019,” Hukuma said.

We’ll win Lagos LG poll, PDP boasts

PDP logo

Having won seats in the House of Assembly and House of Representatives in the last general elections, the Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has boasted that it is better positioned to win if any election is conducted in the state now.

The Publicity Secretary of the party, Taofik Gani who stated this during an interview, added that the catchment areas of the PDP in Lagos State were well outlined now and that the party was working hard to increase the catchment areas.

He took a swipe at the All Progressives Congress, APC, led government in the state for failing to conduct council elections at the expiration of the tenure of democratically elected council chairmen.

“The Lagos State PDP is well prepared for the council elections. We were expecting that local government elections would be conducted at the expiration of the democratically elected council chairmen but for whatever reasons, the former Governor Raji Fashola shied away from conducting the elections.

“But now, a new governor is there and we are insisting that new governments are democratically in place as stipulated by the constitution. We are indeed better fortified to win elections now, if the elections had been held, there would be no reason for us to challenge the government but now that we have won seats in the House of Assembly and House of Representatives, if any election is conducted now, the PDP is better positioned to win.

“Indeed, the catchment areas of the PDP in Lagos State are well outlined now and what we are doing now is to increase the catchment area. On our side, what we are doing is to increase those catchment areas, so we will implore the chairman of the Lagos State Independent National Electoral Commission, LASIEC, who was a former chief judge of Lagos and his members to put in place immediately the guidelines and date for the conduct of local government election. If they have obstacles put by the governor, they should let Lagosians know.

“Lagosians are not happy that up till now, they do not have democratically elected representatives at the council level, this is unfortunate. It is not only illegal, it is also immoral on any governor not to conduct elections. It is deliberate in Lagos State and the reason is because APC was shocked, we jolted them when we won the number of seats in the legislature.

“They never expected it. They are jittery that if they conduct local government elections, apart from the acrimony within the APC, the acceptance of the PDP at this point in time due to the irresponsible governance that we are getting from the Federal government led APC, they will meet their waterloo. That is why the conduct has been deliberately delayed,” he said.

LG Polls: 60 PDP aspirants vie for Ikorodu LCDA

PDP-logo

As at the last count, not less than 60 aspirants have signified interest in contesting for chairmanship and councillorship positions in Ikorodu Central Local Council Development Area, Lagos, southwest Nigeria, in the forthcoming local government elections.

The party which is trying to dislodge the ruling party despite its internal challenges, assured that factions within its fold are resolving their problems.

PDP chairman in the area, Adesina Musiliu, dismissed insinuations that the crisis at the national level would affect the chances of the party in the elections.

“The internal crisis has nothing to do with the growth of the party, and I want to assure you that if the election is free and fair, we have all it takes to win,” he said.

He assured that if elected, PDP would fix bad roads in the area, adding that it would also renovate the many primary schools in the area, which he said were in bad shape.

He said his party would address the concern of the people as regards markets in the area, which he described as expensive and out of reach of the common traders.

The PDP chairman, however, expressed reservations on the logistics for the polls, saying that polling centres are being located in residential homes rather than public places.

“Most of the polling booths are sited in residential houses when they are supposed to be in neutral places like schools, town halls or open fields. As for voters’ cards, many of our people that registered could not access their permanent voters’ cards. This is worrisome if nothing is done before the elections. We are ready for the elections, but our fear is that from all indications, the sitting government may rig it,” he alleged.

This congratulatory message is contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday by Mr Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the president.

Adesina said Buhari joined all members of the APC, friends and immediate family of the eminent leader in celebrating the birthday of Akande.

The president noted with delight that Akande was one of the pillars of the opposition party that had successfully ensured a round victory and smooth transition to unseat an incumbent president in 2015.

According to him, Akande’s wisdom, sacrifices, patriotism and commitment to the unity and development of Nigeria will always be remembered by posterity.

Buhari affirmed that Akande’s present role in the APC as a strong, visionary leader, a reconciling voice, strategist and stabiliser had paid up substantially in the enormous challenge of healing the ruling party, and the country.

The president extolled the passionate and relentless efforts of the statesman in ensuring the entrenchment democracy in Nigeria, and sustenance of the rule of law.

He prayed that the almighty God would grant “Chief Akande longer life, more strength and wisdom to continue serving the country he loves, and humanity”.

Akande was former governor of Osun between 1999 and 2003 and had meritoriously served as deputy governor of old Oyo State from 1979 to 1983.

Jammeh ‘will not step down’ – Information Ministry

President Yayah Jammeh of Gambia

Gambia’s outgoing President Yayah Jammeh will not step down when his mandate which ends on Jan. 18, in spite of his electoral defeat, the Information Ministry said on Thursday.

The autocrat, who ruled the small West African nation for 22 years, will remain in office until the Supreme Court decides on a petition filed by Jammeh.

According to the statement, Jammeh is challenging the result of the Dec. 1 presidential election.

President-elect Adama Barrow, a former real estate agent who was little known before he announced his candidacy, meanwhile reiterated he is planning to take office on Jan. 19, as scheduled.

Earlier, Gambia’s current dysfunctional Supreme Court adjourned hearing Jammeh’s petition till Jan. 16 since only one of a required minimum of five judges were present.

Experts, however, believe it will be highly unlikely that four additional judges will be present on Monday.

This is because the Supreme Court has not been operational since Jammeh fired several of the court’s judges in mid-2016.

All other eligible Court of Appeal judges left the country after the December election.

Observers fear that delays to the planned handover of power could lead to violence.

Former Nasarawa lawmaker dumps PDP for APC

Ahmed Wadada

A three-term member, who represented Karu/Keffi/Kokokona Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Ahmed Wadada, has moved from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking on Thursday at the APC State Secretariat in Lafia, Wadada said he was attracted to the party as a result of the developmental strides of the APC-led government at the national and state levels.

He said that his decision to decamp with all his supporters was done in consultation with the critical stakeholders and communities from his constituency.

Wadada said that, though he was in PDP for more than 16 years, he dumped the party due to his concern and love for his people and in response to their calls.

He said that it was not a one-way traffic as he benefited a lot from the PDP while he was there, adding that the party had also benefited so much from him.

“The name I have today, the honour I have today and the credibility I have today, all came due through the benefits I got while I was still in PDP.

“I also worked seriously for the successes the party had recorded in the past both at the state and federal levels before all those benefits came,” Wadada said.

He said his decision to move to APC was not to escape from being prosecuted for any corrupt activities or dealing in the past by the ruling government.

Wadada, therefore, called on all well-meaning citizens of the state to join hands and support the good work the state government is doing for the peace and progress of the state.

Receiving the new members, the State APC Chairman, Mr. Philip-Tatari-Shekwo thanked the former lawmaker for appreciating what the party is doing in the state.

He commended him, adding that Wadada was not just coming to contest the election but had come in order to contribute to the development of the state.

Tatari-Shekwo, therefore, assured all the decampees that now that they had seen reasons and joined the APC, they would enjoy all the privileges, just like any other person who had been in the party since 2011.

Wadada, who represented Keffi/Karu/Kokona Federal Constituency from 1999 to 2011, was the Nasarawa West PDP Senatorial candidate during the 2015 general election.

Mega party: PDP will not change its name — Gana

Dr Jerry Gana

The Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will not change its registered name for a mega party, Prof. Jerry Gana, has said.

Gana, who chairs the PDP Strategic Review and Inter-party Affairs Committee, made statement on Thursday in Abuja in an interview with newsmen during a meeting of the committee.

Asked for his comment on the recommendations of the committee on the issue of mega party, Gana said that the party’s relationship with other political parties would be based on principle and cleared ‎guidelines.

He said: “on the progress of the alliance, I will not like to give details of what is being recommended, but the PDP is desirous of attracting all lovers of democracy across the country as we move forward.

“There are details I cannot divulge at the moment because the committee’s recommendations will be passed on to the party leadership. It will not be wise to disclose the details before we submit the report.

“On the issue of mega party, we are not yet aware of PDP involvement, but all we can say is that the party wants to relate with lovers of democracy in all the parties.

“We have a syndicate committee working on this chaired by former Deputy Senate President, Ibrahim Mantu.

“They are to give us the guidelines for any re-alignment plan and the number of parties that are willing to join us.

“Our engagement will be based on principle and cleared ‎guidelines.

“PDP is the only party that can be found in every ward, it is the only party that has not changed its name, and we are not going to change the name of our party.’’

Gana said that the committee, which was broken into 11 syndicates, would come up with recommendations that would help to re-position and strengthen the party.

He called on lovers of democracy in the country to rise up against what he described as `degeneration of democratic and electoral process gained during PDP administration.’

“Democracy in Nigeria is under threat and we must rise and defend democracy, because that is the best form of government for humanity now.

“This is not the age for military rule or autocracy.

“In democracy, there must be freedom of voters to choose freely, peacefully, in a free and fair election that is credible,’’ he said.

He said that the PDP condemned in strong terms the current degeneration of electoral process with violence being brought into political arena as witnessed in Rivers.

Gana said that the committee would reconvene in the middle of January 2017 to continue on its deliberations.

The committee, inaugurated on Nov. 8 by Makarfi was given three months to submit its report.

The committee among other mandates is expected to map out strategy how the PDP would reclaim power in 2019 through democratic means.

Enugu Guber Tussle: Court reserves judgment

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State

The Court of Appeal Abuja has reserved judgment on a suit challenging the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Enugu State governorship primary that produced Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi as candidate.

Sen. Anyogu Eze, an aspirant in that contest, had filed the appeal at the appellate court.

Justice Tinuade Akomolafe-Wilson, who led the 3-man panel on Thursday, reserved the judgment after counsel to the parties had adopted their written addresses.

Akomolafe-Wilson said parties would be duly informed when the judgment was ready.

Eze had prayed the court to remove the governor, adding that he (Ugwuanyi) was not validly nominated by the PDP to contest the April 11, 2015, governorship election.

According to him, the governor emerged from an invalid primary election conducted on Dec. 8, 2015, by strange people who had claimed to be leaders of the party.

Mr. Adebayo Adelodun (SAN), counsel to Eze, said Ugwuanyi was merely picked by some persons at the National Headquarters of the party in Abuja.

“My Lords, the purported primary election was organized with doctored list of delegates.

“We have provided substantial evidence in this case to cause the removal of the governor,’’ he said.

The appellant had also prayed the court to set aside the judgment of Justice Evoh Chukwu of the Federal High Court in Abuja which dismissed his suit on March 2, 2015.

Eze had prayed the court to give approval to the parallel primary that produced him.

The appellant had further prayed the court to declare him as the authentic governorship candidate of the party in Enugu State.

Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), counsel to the governor had however urged the court to dismiss the pre-election, adding that it is bereft of merit.

Olanipekun said his client did file an appeal marked CA/A/157b/2015, wherein he challenged validity of the parallel primary election that produced Eze.

He argued that Eze lacked the locus-standi to query his ticket since he did not participate in the primary conducted by the National Working Committee of the party.

“My Lords, the appellant had walked out on the committee that conducted the election. In fact, he refused to abide by the modalities of the primary known to the NWC of the party,’’ he said.

However, NAN reports that the counsel to the governor exhibited result of the primary approved by national leadership of the party.

The document contains names of all the governorship aspirants, including that of appellant.

Olanipekun said: “Though the document contained Eze’s name, but no result was credited to him considering that he boycotted the process.

“He boycotted the election alongside another aspirant, Dr Maduka Onyishi.’’

Lagos PDP threatens LASIEC over delay in conduct of LG poll

Justice Ayotunde Philips, Chairman, Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC).

The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has charged the state Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) to announce the date and guidelines for the conduct of election into the 20 local governments and 37 local council development areas within 14 days.

The party threatened to call for sack of members of the electoral body led by Justice Ayotunde Phillips (retd.) if it failed to do so.

The party’s publicity secretary, Mr. Taofik Gani, in a statement, said the call became necessary following the recent Supreme Court judgment which reiterated the illegality and unconstitutionality of unelected persons to govern local government areas in the country.

The party threatened that it would sponsor the removal of the present LASIEC board particularly to prevent disobedience to the councils’ bye laws and authorities.

The party added that the tenure of the last democratically elected local government councils had since lapsed in 2014, but former Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola refused to hold elections and instead constituted illegal council governments.

“This call is on the heels of the recent decision of the Supreme Court judgment which has again further reiterated the illegality and unconstitutionality of unelected persons to govern local government areas.

“The Supreme Court led by Justice Rhodes-Vivour reaffirmed the need for local governments to be run by only democratically elected persons as chairmen. Justice Vivour is a lagos state slot at the supreme Court.

“Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of Lagos High Court had sometimes in 2006 declared such caretaker committees in Lagos councils as illegal. By all these plethora of judgments and the composition of LASIEC, this unending delay can no longer be justified,” the party said.

It challenged the LASIEC to purge itself of the accusations that it was incompetent and partisan, thereby lacking the confidence to conduct credible local government polls occasioning the unending delay to hold the exercise.

“We specifically challenge the LASIEC headed by Justice Phillips (retd) to purge itself of the accusations that it is incompetent and partisan, thereby lacking the confidence to conduct credible local government polls hence the unending delay to conduct the polls,” the PDP said.

The party maintained that it was very expedient for the third tier of government to have democratically elected persons to carry out the developments contemplated in the constitution as well as compliment the state and Federal governments.

Rivers rerun marred by killings, bomb blasts, gunshots, thuggery, violence and snatching of ballot boxes

Rivers rerun marred by killings, bomb blasts, gunshots, thuggery, violence and snatching of ballot boxes

Like the 2015 general elections and the March 19 rerun, yesterday’s legislative rerun in Rivers State was again marred by killings, bomb blasts, gunshots, thuggery, violence and snatching of ballot boxes and other electoral materials.

The Rivers Governor, Nyesom Wike, alleged that two agents of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were shot dead in Bodo-Ogoni in Gokana Local Government Area of the state, allegedly by security agents.

Bodo-Ogoni is the hometown of the Secretary to the Rivers State Government (SSG), Chief Kenneth Kobani, while the shooting mostly took place at St. Pius College of the crude oil and gas-rich town, when accreditation and voting were about to commence.

The deafening gunshots in Bodo made the electorate and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to scamper to safety.

There were also bomb blasts in Abonnema-Kalabari, the headquarters of Akuku-Toru LGA of the state, with elections in the area postponed till today.

Hoodlums equally engaged security personnel in heavy shootout in Bori, the traditional headquarters of Ogoniland and the seat of Khana LGA of the state and other parts of the council, with gunshots also recorded in Etche LGA of Rivers.

The electoral commission announced the cancellation of the polls in Unit 3, Ward 9 of Bolo in Ogu/Bolo LGA of the state, over snatching of electoral materials by hoodlums.4

INEC’s electoral materials for the rerun in Unit 10, Ward 3 of Oyigbo, the headquarters of Oyigbo LGA of the state were snatched by hoodlums.

The Rivers Chairman of the PDP, Chief Felix Obuah, raised the alarm on the arrest and killing of many members of the party, allegedly by soldiers in Tai-Ogoni and Gokana-Ogoni LGAs of the state.
He said: “PDP in Rivers State condemns Nigerian Army’s arrest and killing of members of PDP in Tai and Gokana LGAs. The soldiers arrested over 200 PDP members in Tai LGA, 12 innocent PDP members were shot and one member of the party was killed in Tai LGA.

“Barako community in Gokana LGA was also invaded by soldiers; scores of PDP members were arrested.”

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the newly-created 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt, Maj.-Gen. Kasimu Abdulkarim, described as false, the alarm raised by Rivers PDP chairman.

Maj.-Gen. Abdulkarim, yesterday in a telephone interview, admonished all right-thinking Rivers people and other stakeholders to ignore the lies of Obuah and other leaders of the PDP.
The GOC said: “It (Obuah’s allegation) is not true. Let them not create conflict within a conflict. Nobody should raise any alarm. I have just returned to the office in Port Harcourt, from monitoring the elections, which have been peaceful and the voters are orderly.

“I was with the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Operations), Habila Joshak, when the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, called him to know the security situation on the ground and he (DIG) told IGP that everywhere was very calm and the electorate exercising their franchise. I do not know why they will cry wolf, where there is none.”

Bulk of the voting yesterday took place in seven LGAs of Andoni, Akuku-Toru, Bonny, Etche, Ikwerre, Khana and Gokana, while the rerun was planned for 1,840 polling units in the 23 LGAs, across the three senatorial districts of the state, before violence erupted in some parts of the state.

The polls were to elect three senators, eight of 13 members of the House of Representatives and nine (not 10) of 32 members of Rivers House of Assembly, excluding Degema constituency, being occupied by an ex-militant leader, Farah Dagogo, based on favourable judgment of the Court of Appeal, Abuja penultimate week.

To ensure free, fair, credible and peaceful rerun, there was heavy deployment of soldiers, policemen, operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agents in the hitherto volatile Niger Delta state.

The Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), could not vote yesterday at his Ubima hometown in Ikwerre LGA, because the result sheet was missing, with the presiding officer of his Unit 14 later arrested by security agents.

Gunmen also carted away all the electoral materials in Unit 16, Ubima, shortly after another indigene of the town, Sir Celestine Omehia, a former Rivers governor, but of the PDP, voted.

Heavy shootout was also witnessed at Ubima till late in the evening yesterday, with the electoral materials of Unit 3, Ward 8 in the town also carted away by hoodlums, while the ballot boxes of some units in Ward 3, Elele, in the same Ikwerre LGA, were snatched.

The Rivers governor, later in an online statement yesterday evening by his Special Assistant on Electronic Media, Simeon Nwakaudu, accused the Nigerian Army and the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigerian Police of killing the two PDP agents, hijacking electoral materials and working to deliver a particular candidate in Rivers Southeast Senatorial District.

He claimed that no matter the use of the Nigerian Army and SARS personnel by the APC-led Federal Government, Rivers state would never be conquered.
Wike stated that he was reacting to the mass shootings by soldiers and policemen in Khana, Gokana, Akuku-Toru and Etche LGAs of the state during the rerun, alleging that the security agents were deployed in Rivers to manipulate the results of the polls.

He alleged that true to the claim by the APC governors and leaders of the party that they would use federal might against Rivers people, he claimed that the military had been used to rig the elections in parts of the state, even when INEC was still collating the results at the LG level.
The governor claimed that in Khana LGA, the election materials for the entire LGA were hijacked by soldiers and SARS personnel.

He noted that in Gokana LGA, soldiers hijacked electoral materials for Wards 2 and 3 in Bodo, where the military men killed the two PDP agents, allegedly in the process of fleeing with the materials.
Wike stated that out of the 19 wards of Etche LGA, soldiers and SARS operatives hijacked electoral materials for four wards.

He stressed that the unfortunate onslaught by the military and SARS personnel started in the night of December 9, when Amaechi backed by a battalion of soldiers and over 20 SARS personnel, allegedly attempted to hijack electoral materials from the Isiokpo INEC headquarters in his Ikwerre LGA (Amaechi is from Ubima), but was resisted by the youths.
The Rivers governor noted that in Opobo-Nkoro LGA, where the governorship candidate of the APC during the 2015 election, Dr. Dakuku Peterside (he is from Opobo Town, the LG headquarters), hails from, soldiers allegedly hijacked electoral materials and took them to the home of a member of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the APC, Dr. Sam Sam Jaja.
Wike said: “I anticipated it. I tried to let the world know that these are the plans of the security agencies.
“In all my political career, I have never experienced this kind of invasion by security agencies. What causes violence is when you give certain persons undue advantage.
“Be assured that we are resisting it. It may take our lives, but we will resist it to the last. That is what is expected, when you are fighting for freedom. You must make sacrifices.
“It is unfortunate that we are congratulating the opposition for winning in Ghana, but here the military men are directly involved in rigging and hijacking of electoral materials.”
“They say they want to give Rivers State Governor problems, but you are not giving Rivers State Governor problems, you are giving Nigeria problems.”

Rivers governor also stated that he had informed an unnamed National Commissioner of INEC and the Resident Electoral Commissioner of the commission in Rivers State, Aniedi Ikoiwak, of the problems in Khana and Gokana LGAs, with an assurance that action would be taken.
The Rivers Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Nnamdi Omoni, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), was contacted at 6:51 p.m. yesterday to react to Wike’s allegations, but he declared that the Rivers police command was not aware of what the governor claimed to have happened during the rerun.

Peterside, who is also the Director General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), however, declared that no amount of propaganda and lies could save Wike and his PDP from being rejected by Rivers people.

The APC chieftain, while speaking yesterday, after visiting his Andoni-Opobo/Nkoro federal constituency, where he said voting went on smoothly, lauded INEC and its officials for the impressive performance, in spite of the challenging situations.

He accused the governor of embarking on all manners of propaganda and blackmail against the leaders of the APC, security agencies and INEC, in an attempt to hoodwink unsuspecting members of the public.

Peterside, a former member of the House of Representatives, expressed displeasure at the manner known sympathisers of PDP and serving Rivers government officials were spreading falsehood and publishing fake results both in the traditional and social media.
He said: “Rivers people are tired of Wike and his PDP propaganda, which defy any form of civility and sense of decorum. The governor has made all manner of cries and wailing, in an attempt to be seen as the victim and attract sympathy, even he is busy hatching evil plans by the day.

“The truth is that is the Rivers governor and his PDP members have been plotting all manner of evil and are desperate. Wike is only crying, because all his plans have been checkmated by the presence of security agencies and determination of Rivers people to reject him, because of his deceit.”

The NIMASA boss also called on Rivers people to ignore results being circulated on the social media and mischief of PDP members, who he insisted had been stopped in their known tracks.

INEC Ballot Box

Mr. Babatope Akinyele, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) advised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to be neutral in the conduct of Saturday Ifako/Ijaiye Federal Constituency by-election in Lagos state.

Akinyele gave the advice on Thursday in Ifako/Ijaiye while speaking with newsmen on the sideline of the stakeholders’ forum organized by INEC on the forthcoming exercise.

He expressed delight on the preparedness of the commission for the election.

“I believe INEC is ready. With what I see on ground, INEC is ready for this election and I don’t see anything otherwise,” he said.

The candidate, who urged voters to come out en masse to vote for PDP, promised to bring ‘’real transformation’’ to the area if voted.

He said that he would influence real change to the area in terms of road infrastructure, quality representation and empowerment.

“I know what the people need. I know the basic things people expect from the government and these will be my priority.

“I am a listener who will not dash the hope of the masses. I am the best candidate for the job.

“I am are not going to be distracted representing them and in bringing to them dividends of democracy.

The six political parties to contest in the poll are Action Alliance (AA), Alliance for Democracy (AD), African Democratic Party (ADC), All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Ondo election shows democracy is maturing in Nigeria

Akeredolu after winning in his polling booth

Akeredolu after winning in his polling booth

Mr. Philip Nyam, a Public Affairs Analyst, based in Abuja, on Monday, said that the conduct and outcome of the Nov.26 Ondo state Governorship showed that democracy was maturing in Nigeria.

Nyam made the remark on Monday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja while reacting to the just concluded governorship in that state.

He added that the successful and peaceful conclusion of the election was indicative of the improved performance of INEC in organizing elections in the country.

“Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu’s victory is a clear sign that democracy is maturing and that INEC has improved with each election‎.

“This is because some of the lapses we saw during the Edo gubernatorial election have been taken care of,” he said.

Nyam added that the victory of Akeredolu was a clear sign that Nigerians still had faith in the ability of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a party that delivered on its promises to the people.

“The victory is also a sign that Nigerians still have faith in the ability of the APC to deliver on its promises.

“It shows that people are beginning to appreciate that the current recession is not caused by the present administration.

“It is also clear that Akeredolu is more popular than the rest of the gubernatorial candidates and has played his cards well,” he said.

Also in his reaction, Mr. Emmanuel Iriogbe, a Media Consultant, congratulated the Governor-elect and urged him to build the programmes of his administration on the social and economic development of the people.

The media practitioner also called on the Akeredolu to work on the mistakes of his predecessors to make life more meaningful for Ondo people.

“He should be magnanimous in victory by eschewing politics of bitterness and carry all, irrespective of leaning for the overall development of the state.

“Government is all-embracing, therefore, the governor-elect will do well by bringing in members of other parties for dialogue, to heal the wounds of electoral campaigns.

“I wish the governor-elect well,” he said.

Dr Dakuku Peterside, the Director General of Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), has congratulated Chief Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) of the APC for winning the Ondo State governorship election.

In a statement made on Sunday in Abuja, Peterside maintained that the APC would have won the state in any free, fair and credible election devoid of violence and intimidation.

He called on the governor-elect to be humble in his victory and see his emergence as the wish of the people of the state to chart a new course in the realization of their hopes and aspirations.

“The people of Ondo State have spoken in loud and clear voice. They have chosen the candidate of their choice in a free and fair manner.

“I have always said that APC will win any free and fair contest. I congratulate the people of Ondo State and Chief Rotimi Akeredolu for this victory.

“I call on Chief Akeredolu to see his victory as that of the entire Ondo State people.

“The fact that he won across the three senatorial zones means he was popularly elected.

“They have put their confidence in him and the onus is now on him to assuage their feelings and begin to set the template for fulfilling their hopes and aspirations,” Peterside said.

‪He urged the people of Rivers to follow the Ondo State example in the forthcoming Dec. 10 rerun election in the state and reintegrate into the mainstream politics “to get maximum benefit from development programme at the center.

Ondo Election: Akeredolu’s victory is God’s wish – Buhari

Ondo Election: Akeredolu’s victory is God’s wish – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday congratulated the Ondo State Governor-elect, Chief Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN), describing his victory at the Saturday governorship election in the state as “a well-deserved victory and God's wish”

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the President also congratulated the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; the Chairman of the Campaign Committee, Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State, and all party faithful who he said put in their best and braved the odds to ensure a successful outing for the party’s candidate.

He rejoiced with the people of the state who he said aligned with his own belief that Akeredolu, with his pedigree, possesses the qualities to transform the state into the Ondo of their dreams.

“From the beginning, this election set out to be a different kind of election. The unity and resilience of the party was tested. I am happy we came out of this victorious.

“This is a huge win. The mood today is against corruption, insecurity and for the restoration of the economy and the creation of jobs. This is where the party stands and I am happy that the electorate has read the situation correctly,” said the President.
