Metro: One feared dead, scores injured, houses razed in Kogi State communal clash

A disagreement over ownership of a farmland and five fishing ponds between the people of Kabawa in Lokoja and the Onumaye people of Kotokarfe Local Councils of Kogi State yesterday turned bloody.

Scores were reportedly injured and many houses burnt by suspected irate youths.

The crises started when two Kabawa boys were abducted from their farms on the island.

It was learnt that youths from Onumaye village, numbering over 100, armed with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons, went on a reprisak attack..

On hearing the news of the attack, the youths from Kabawa went on rampage, attacking anybody believed to be close to the chief of Onumaye. Houses were burnt and in the process, one Baba Salisu was stabbed to death in his father’s house.

Speaking to journalists in his palace in Lokoja, the Ward Head of Zone E, Mallam Abubakar Yahaya, said the crisis over the land and the ponds started when one Yakubu Danjuma became a chief in Onumaye. He built his palace in Kabawa and claimed ownership of the land.
According to him, the people of Kabawa have been living in peace with their neighbours, adding that the recent skirmishes came as a surprise to him.

“We inherited the ponds and farmland from our forefathers, over 150 years ago. The fishing festival has been celebrated yearly and people from all over have been coming to grace the occasion.

“But when Danjuma was turbaned early this year, and when he was supposed to relocate to his village to rule his people , he stayed put in Lokoja, claiming the ownership of this land…”

Meanwhile the Lokoja monarch, Alhaji Muhammad Kabir Makarfi 111, has urged the people to respect the rights of others and stop acts of violence , saying what happened was alien to his people.

He charged the people to allow the security agents to do their job and warned whoever found wanting would face the wrath of the law.

Metro: Man allegedly buys over N400,000 worth of recharge cards from unsuspecting bank customer’s account

Nigeria Police

Operatives of the Lagos Rapid Response Squad (RSS) of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a man, who allegedly recharged his phone from another person’s bank account.

The suspect, Ebenezer Oyeneye, a 50-year-old truck driver, who resides at No. 4, Moyinoluwa Avenue, Ijoko Lemode, Ogun State, was arrested by the decoy team of RRS.

It was reported at Aguda Divisional Police Headquarters in Surulere that one woman, who wanted to remain anonymous,  reported that an unknown person has been obtaining for his phone credit from her bank account at one of the new generation commercial banks in the country since July 2016.

The victim complained about the frequency and sum of money which the suspect had withdrawn from her bank account by purchasing a credit “top up,” which is usually debited from her account.

The victim noted that the fraud began on July 4, 2016, after she received a debit alert from her bank that she had recharged a sum of N1,000 call credit  for her phone line without sending such command or initiating such transaction.

“I was amazed when my financial institution notified me of a debit on my bank account and the same thing continued for 11 months.”

The woman filed the case with the operatives of the Aguda Divisional Headquarters, Surulere,  from where it was transferred to RRS for an in-depth investigation. This led to the arrest of the suspect, Ebenezer. He was arrested and questioned on his involvement in the crime by the decoy team of the RRS.

He confessed that in July 2016, after the truck he used to drive was retrieved from him by the owner due to a misunderstanding. With nothing to live on and maintain his family needs, he then found a means of livelihood after trying to recharge his phone line with a short code and was credited N1,000 immediately.

“I tried it the following day and I was issued a N3,000 balance which was also credited and so I  continued to recharge for months.”

“I became so overwhelmed by the value of my call credit balance and I immediately resorted to selling some to people around me before I was blocked.

The suspect confessed to have been sharing his loot with his wife and calling his mistresses as a big man with so much call credit.

When told the amount he had recharged within 11months, Ebenezer said he knew he would have recharged up to the said amount (N400,000) because he did not give a break as he found it profitable using the illegal platform to enrich himself.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Olarinde Famous- Cole, has advised members of the public to seek professional counsel from their financial institutions before connecting their bank account to any online transaction and report immediately any case of strange activities on their bank account to the necessary authorities.

Metro: Southern Kaduna community petitions El-Rufai over illegal acquisition of land for solar project

Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai

• Says it is harmful to health
The people of Kaura and Zangon-Kataf local councils of Kaduna State have petitioned Governor Nasir el-Rufai over the illegal allocation of their land for the establishment of a solar farm. They say the facility poses great danger to the health and economy of the people in the area.

A protest letter to the governor dated November 17, 2017 and signed by the leaders of the community landowners, the people said: “The landowners of the defunct Manchok Ranch were not aware that the Kaduna State Government had seized their lands and allocated them to private companies until they saw a letter with Ref. No. KLG/ADM/WKS/141/I dated February 24, 2016 written by the Sole Administrator of Kaura Local Council asking communities that had any complaints about the allocation of the land to Quaint Global Energy Nigeria Limited to forward such complaints to the office of the Local Council Chairman.”

The Kaura (Watyap) Community Development Association was said to have written a protest letter to the Sole Administrator, Kaura Local Council, stating that the land belonged to their people and not Manchok, and that they had no knowledge of the takeover of their lands, nor were they aware of any research by Quaint Global Energy for the purpose of producing an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment
(EIA).

The community leaders said that while “the Watyap landowners asked the government to put on hold the project until issues pertaining to the ownership of the land had been resolved, there has been no response from the government over the petition by the landowners.”

They said: “We wish to refer to the meeting of stakeholders of the defunct Manchok Cattle Ranch held at the Council Chamber, Government House, Kaduna, on Tuesday, November 14, 2017. At the end of the meeting, the Deputy Governor of Kaduna State, who chaired the meeting, asked the Chairman, Kaura Local Council to convene a meeting of stakeholders to decide whether the communities wanted the project or not, and report to the government.

“Having the mandate of the actual landowners to speak for them, and having already been directed by the owners of the land to convey their individual and collective positions over the taking over of their land, we wish to reiterate the position of the landowners as follows:

• “That the landowners do not accept the solar energy project by Access Quaint for the reasons stated above, which are, inter-alia, the land in question belongs to the families and individuals who have inherited it from their forefathers, and desire to continue owning and using that land by themselves for agricultural purposes, and the land in question is the best agricultural land available to the farmers and the community, and the owners do not accept that such prime agricultural land should be used for solar farming when there are available alternative land for such project as the case is all over the world.

• “Being farmers, and earning their livelihoods from the land, the landowners will lose their means of livelihood if the land were taken away from them contrary to best practices throughout the world.

• “Materials provided by Access Quaint to our communities, including pictorials on similar projects they have handled elsewhere, show that in all such projects, none are situated near or within human settlements. The project will be harmful to our communities, and cannot be accepted.”

Metro: Revisit Onokpite’s murder, release Kevin Onirah, group begs government

Late Ogbe Onokpite

A coalition of Urhobo Nation Young Leaders and Stakeholders (CUNYLS) has called on appropriate authorities to revisit the extra-judicial murder of Chief Ogbe Onokpite, who was killed seven years ago in Warri, Delta State and bring perpetrators to justice.

The group, which is made up of Urhobo Progress Union, Price of Place and Self-Determination Movement, in a press release signed by Rex Ekiugbo Anighoro, a rights activist, equally demanded for the unconditional release of Kelvin Onirah, a Niger Delta activist, who was detained for challenging the marginalisation of the Urhobo nation by the Nigerian state.

The group, which recently staged a protest in Abuja, said in a statement: “We demand freedom for Kelvin Onirah, who as a Niger Delta activist, engaged in pursuit for advancing Urhobo and Niger Delta greater good, just like many other Niger Delta agitators, who are walking free.

“We demand his unconditional release. We believe it will aid the cause of peace and integration in the region for the good of all.

“We also demand justice for the extra-judicial murder of Chief Ogbe Onokpite, a prominent Urhobo young adult, whose death seven years ago, has remained a sad commentary of injustice.

“We call on all Urhobo leaders in the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) to rise up to pursue freedom and justice for these two Urhobo sons, irrespective of perceived and alleged shortcomings…”

Metro: Bus conductors to start wearing uniform in Lagos January 1, 2018

The Bus Conductors Association of Nigeria (BCAN) says that its members in Lagos State will start wearing uniforms from January 1, 2018 for security and effective service delivery. National President of the association, Mr. Israel Adeshola, told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos yesterday.

Adeshola said the operational uniform would bring sanity to the service in the state and the country as a whole.

According to him, the association has started training  its members in Lagos State and educating them on the job procedures and attitudinal change while on duty.

“The association has been able to train a reasonable number of conductors on behavioural change.

“We started the registrations and training at Lagos State Drivers Institute for attitudinal and change in orientation of the members toward passengers and traffic rules.

“By January1, 2018, all our registered members will be in their operational uniforms for proper identification and effective service delivery,” he said.

The president explained that part of the reasons for training its members was to ensure adequate security of passengers and good customer relationship with the people they relate with.

He said that putting on uniforms  with identification numbers would ensure accountability and brought sense of responsibility among the members.

Adeshola said that the association was working towards eradicating the menace of using under-age as bus conductors across the country.
He announced that persons from 18 years and above were qualified to join the association.

The president added that any minor found operating as a bus conductor should be arrested.

“We are coming out to tell Lagos residents that bus conducting is a respected profession like in other western countries where they are respected because they offered humanitarian services.

“In Nigeria, people see them as nobody which is not supposed to be so,” he said.

NAN reports that Mr Rotimi Amaechi, the Minister of Transport had said that the introduction of uniforms for bus conductors would ensure safety and bring more development to the nation’s transport sector.

Amaechi spoke at the inauguration of the official uniforms for members of the Bus Conductor Association of Nigeria (BCAN), Lagos State chapter, on Thursday August 2, at Sheraton Hotels, Ikeja, Lagos.

“You have to change the perception of the people; you have to create a positive impression about yourself and make yourself accessible,” he said. (NAN)

SPORT: African Wrestling fiesta will bring unity to Rivers State, says Dalung

Solomon Dalung, Minister of Youth and Sport.

Youth and Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung says hosting of the forthcoming African Wrestling Championship billed for Port Harcourt from February 7 to 11, 2018 will help unite the people of the Rivers State and Nigeria.

Speaking when the Local Organising Committee, led by Boma Iyayi paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja, the minister posited that sports is the only tool that can be used to promote national integration, douse tension and mobilize Nigerians to see themselves as one.

“I have been in line with the preparation and I have also received the African President here in Nigeria when he came on an inspection of facilities. We have dutifully supported this cause on two strong grounds. One is that Honourable Daniel Igali is a very unique Nigerian, who did wrestling, won medals and came back to impart his knowledge on to Nigerians.

“Secondly, I believe that the championship taking place next year in Port Harcourt will help in correcting the erroneous impression that has been created about the people of Rivers state. Today, the situation in Rivers State has been negated by disagreements among leaders and we need to abate that situation by securing the young people, giving them a sense of belonging and associating them with the Nigerian family, so that they can rightly belong.

“I believe this championship will go a long way to reunite the people of Rivers state and Nigeria in general.”

Dalung thanked the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike for accepting to host the championship, while  praising the local organizing committee for their hard work. He challenged  them to make the event a successful one.

Earlier, the Chairman of the organizing committee, Boma Iyayi thanked the minister for his support in acquiring the hosting rights for the championship.

“Sport is one of the major tools binding us. This is an opportunity for us to unite everybody in Nigeria. Rivers State is just privileged to host the African Wrestling Championship but it is a Nigerian event. We seek your indulgence to please give us the necessary support.

“We will show the hospitality of Rivers State to Africa and showcase Nigeria to the world,”Iyayi said.

The National Wrestling Championship comes up from November 23 to 30, 2017 at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Alfred Diette-Spiff Civic Center in Port Harcourt.

It will be used as a yardstick to showcase preparations ahead of the African championship and choose wrestlers, who will represent the country at the African Championship.

SPORT: Pillars, Gombe Bulls qualify for FIBA Africa Club Championship

Kano Pillars and Niger Potters battling for points during a recent game. Pillars and Gombe Bulls will represent Nigeria at the FIBA Africa Club Championship billed for Tunisia… next month.

• NBBF sues for peace ahead November 30 deadline
Nigerian clubs, Kano Pillars and Gombe Bulls have qualified for the 2017 FIBA Africa Club Championship after emerging tops at the FIBA Zone 3 qualifiers, which ended in Lagos at the weekend.

The two teams will fly Nigeria’s flags at the continental club championship scheduled for Tunisia later this year.

Kano Pillars Basketball Club was unbeaten throughout the tourney by winning all their five games against Gombe Bulls, Aspac of Benin Republic, Civil Defence of Abuja, Mark Mentors of Abuja and Customs of Ghana, who it beat by 46-66 in their last game at the weekend to emerge champions of the tournament.

Gombe Bulls only lost a game to its archrival, Kano Pillars and defeated other teams to claim the second spot and pick a ticket to the finals for the first time in the club’s history.

Kator Gar powered his team to another historic win with 17 points, three assists and five rebounds to give the Gombe side its first continental ticket.

Speaking with The Guardian after the qualifiers, Pillars’ legend, Abubakar Usman, who had a good outing during the competition, stated that the motivation given to the team by the club’s management was the secret behind its success.

He revealed that his team’s target is to win the African club championship.

Meanwhile, NBBF president, Musa Kida has revealed that negotiations were still on going with the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) and the former president of NBBF, Tijani Umar to resolve the federation’s crises before the November 30 deadline given it by FIBA Africa.

“The NBBF is working hard to cooperate with relevant stakeholders as directed by FIBA to find a lasting solution for the current problems associated with the transition of leadership every four years. We believe that the way the case is being handled and resolved by the NOC the future of basketball would be bright in the coming years.

“We are doing this for the sake of players and coaches, whose lives depend on the dunking game. We plead with the press to avoid reporting issues that would affect the progress of the peace process,” he said.

SPORT: Nigerian defender, Leon Balogun breaks hand, undergoes surgery

Nigeria powerful defender Leon Balogun has returned to the treatment room days after helping the Super Eagles beat South American giants Argentina 4-2 in Krasnodar in Russia on November 14.

His German Bundesliga club Mainz 05 confirmed on their official Twitter account on Sunday that the 29-year-old suffered a fracture to his left hand on Friday and had undergone surgery.

The former Werder Bremen player, who made his international debut in the 0-0 draw in a friendly game against Mexico in March 2014, missed Mainz’s league clash against Cologne at Opel Arena on Saturday. Mainz won 1-0.

Balogun on October 20 underwent an operation on his broken cheek bone after he was injured in his team’s 2-0 defeat by Schalke 04 in their Bundesliga clash at Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen.

The development forced the former Darmstadt 98 star to wear a mask while playing for the O-Fives and the Eagles.

The German-born player’s partnership with Turkey-based William Troost-Ekong in the heart of Nigeria’s defence played a key role in getting Nigeria through to the Russia 2018 World Cup.

Mainz wrote on their Twitter handle on Sunday, “@LeonBalogun suffered a fracture to his left hand on Friday and has undergone surgery. Luckily, he will be able to carry on playing.

“Get well soon, Leon!”

According to reports in the German media, Balogun could return to the field in coming weeks to help Mainz, who are 12th in the Bundesliga table, move up the ladder before the Christmas break.

SPORT: Record-breaking Valencia maintain Barca chase

Valencia's Spanish forward Santiago Mina Lorenzo (C) shoots to score a goal during the Spanish league football match RCD Espanyol vs Valencia CF at the RCDE Stadium in Cornella de Llobregat on November 19, 2017. LLUIS GENE / AFP

Valencia maintained their pursuit of Barcelona to remain four points off the La Liga leaders thanks to second-half goals from Geoffrey Kondogbia and Santi Mina to beat a luckless Espanyol 2-0 on Sunday.

A club record eighth straight La Liga win for Valencia moves Marcelino Garcia Toral's men six points clear of Real Madrid in third and sets up a mouthwatering top of the table showdown at home to Barcelona next Sunday.

However, the visitors had fortune on their side as Espanyol dominated for large spells and hit the woodwork twice.

Marcelino surprisingly left top scorer Simone Zaza and on-loan Paris Saint-Germain forward Goncalo Guedes on the bench and that decision nearly backfired as Valencia struggled to gain a foothold in the first hour.

Gerard Moreno and Sergi Darder both struck the post for the hosts in a six-minute spell just before half-time.

Valencia's goalkeeper Neto also had to show smart reactions to deny Sergio Garcia and Moreno once more as Espanyol looked the more likely side to make the breakthrough.

The pressure Valencia were under was seen on the sidelines as Marcelino was sent to the stands for his protests towards the officials and could now be banned from the touchline against Barca.

However, a moment of magic from Kondogbia swung the game Valencia's way 23 minutes from time as he curled home a wonderful strike from 25 yards.

And Mina pounced on Victor Sanchez's short back-pass to calmly side-foot past Pau Lopez on the volley to secure all three points.

At the other end of the table, Malaga came from behind to edge a five-goal thriller against Deportivo la Coruna 3-2 to move off the bottom of the table.

Borja Baston's first goal for the club six minutes from time saw Malaga leapfrog Las Palmas and Alaves to close within a point of safety.

Metro: Lagos bus conductors to start wearing uniforms in January 2018

The Bus Conductors Association of Nigeria (BCAN) says that its members in Lagos State will start wearing uniforms from Jan. 1, 2018 for security and effective service delivery.

Mr Isreal Adeshola, the National President of the association, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Sunday.

Adeshola said the operational uniform would bring sanity to the service in the state and the country as a whole.

According to him, the association has started training its members in Lagos State and educating them on the job procedures and attitudinal change while on duty.

“The association has been able to train a reasonable number of conductors on behavioural change.

“We started the registrations and training at Lagos State Drivers Institute for attitudinal and change in orientation of the members towards passengers and traffic rules.

“By Jan.1, 2018, all our registered members will be in their operational uniforms for proper identification and effective service delivery,” he said.

The president explained that part of the reasons for training its members was to ensure adequate security of passengers and good customer relationship with the people they relate with.

He said that putting on uniforms with identification numbers would ensure accountability and brought a sense of responsibility among the members.

Amaechi spoke at the inauguration of the official uniforms for members of the Bus Conductor Association of Nigeria (BCAN), Lagos State chapter, on Thursday, August 2, at Sheraton Hotels, Ikeja, Lagos.

“You have to change the perception of the people; you have to create a positive impression about yourself and make yourself accessible,” he said.

SPORT: South African Zolani Tete makes boxing history with fastest world title KO

Zolani Tete took just 11 seconds to record the fastest knockout in world championship fight history in Belfast on Saturday night.

The South African etched his name into the record books when he flattened countryman Siboniso Gonya with his first punch to retain his World Boxing Organisation bantamweight crown.

Tete floored his opponent with a devastating right hook after just five seconds and the referee stopped the contest officially just six seconds later when it became clear Gonya was out cold.

It is the fastest knockout in a world championship bout, eclipsing the record held by WBO superbantamweight champion Daniel Jimenez who stopped Harald Geier in 17 seconds in 1994.

"I've been preparing so hard for this fight," Tete told the BoxNation television channel. "I knew Gonya wasn't going to last."

Promoter Frank Warren added: "He was gone before he hit the canvas. Tete is something special."

On the same card, local hero Jamie Conlan failed in his attempt to win a world title when the Northern Irishman was stopped in the sixth round by Filipino International Boxing Federation super flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas in a one-sided contest.

ENTERTAINMENT: India’s Manuchi Chhillar is the new Miss World

An Indian medical student, Manuchi Chhillar, was crowned Miss World at a glitzy event in a Chinese resort on Saturday, making her the 67th to be crowned in the history of the pageant. Chhillar, 20, is the sixth Indian winner of the long-running contest, following in the footsteps of Bollywood actresses Priyanka Chopra and Aishwarya Rai.

Her win brings India level with Venezuela as the countries with most victories in the history of the pageant, now in its 67th edition. Chhillar, 20, is a trained Indian classical dancer who also enjoys painting and hopes to open a chain of non-profit hospitals in rural areas, according to the Miss World website. “Thank you, everyone, for your constant love, support,” and prayers she wrote on Twitter.

“This one’s for India.” Chhillar’s victory rapidly became a top trending topic on the social media platform in India after the announcement, with Manohar Lal Khattar — the minister of her home state of Haryana — among the first to offer congratulations. Chhillar was handed the crown by last year’s winner, Stephanie del Valle of Puerto Rico, at the ceremony in the Chinese coastal city of Sanya on Saturday night.

Stephanie Hill of England and Andrea Meza of Mexico finished as runners-up. Saturday marked the Miss World pageant’s return to Sanya, on southern China’s Hainan Island, for a seventh time, where the event was last held in 2015. At the previous occasion two years ago, controversy erupted as officials in Hong Kong stopped Miss Canada, Anastasia Lin, from boarding a plane bound for Sanya, telling her she would not receive a visa.

The 25-year old actress claimed the decision was due to her stance on China’s human rights record, including its persecution of Falun Gong, a Chinese spiritual group of which she is a practitioner.

At last year’s event in the United States, Lin was again embroiled in controversy when pageant officials reportedly warned her against speaking to the press for three weeks about human rights abuses in China. Miss Lin did not participate in this year’s event, with Canada represented instead by Cynthia Menard, a high school student.

SPORT: Goffin shocks Federer, qualifies for ATP finals

Belgium's David Goffin celebrates beating Switzerland's Roger Federer during their men's singles semi-final match on day seven of the ATP World Tour Finals tennis tournament at the O2 Arena in London on November 18, 2017. David Goffin won 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Glyn KIRK / AFP

David Goffin mounted a spirited fightback to stun six-time champion Roger Federer, and reach the final of the season-ending ATP Finals in London.

The Belgian seventh seed, 26, came from a set down to win 2-6 6-3 6-4, his first victory in seven attempts against the 19-time Grand Slam champion.

“I have no words. I cannot describe how I’m feeling - so much joy, so much happiness,” said Goffin.Grigor Dimitrov will face Jack Sock in the second semi-final at 20:00 GMT.

Britain’s Jamie Murray and Brazilian Bruno Soares take on defending champions Henri Kontinen and John Peers in the doubles semi-finals at the O2 Arena at 18:00.

Federer, 36, had been a strong favourite to land his seventh title at the season finale, but will be absent from today’s final after suffering only his fifth defeat of 2017.

The Swiss can reflect on a remarkable year in which he has won two more major titles, among 52 match victories, but it is six years since he last won the ATP Finals.\

“It’s a bit disappointing for me because it’s indoors, it’s a court I like to play on, but I had my chances and missed them,” said Federer.

“When he had them, he was very committed. I think that was the difference.“He’s crushed me too many times in practice to not also do it once in a match situation.”

SPORT: It’s unethical to keep two jobs as a coach, says Laloko

• Queries Maikaba’s Choice Over Finidi As U-17 Coach

Former Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Coach Kashimawo Laloko, has described as immoral, the recent hiring of Abdullahi Maikaba, as coach of the U-17 national team since he is still under the employ of a Nigeria Professional Football (NPFL) club side.

Former Super Eagles winger, Finidi George, had volunteered to coach the team for free and is currently unattached. However, Maikaba, who got the nod ahead of him, coaches Akwa United FC.Speaking to The Guardian yesterday, Laloko said he cannot, but wonder why the NFF appointed Maikaba, as against George, who wants to offer free service.

“I do not know why they did that. I do not know why Maikaba was picked as the U-17 coach. I trained Maikaba in the Pepsi Academy in Kano. I doubt if he knows much about youth development in football.

“There are people who applied for that job, who have good training in youth development. For example Finidi George applied and you denied him. This is one person, who had been to Holland, Spain and many countries of the world.

“So, if this person is saying that he wants to help us in the youth development of our football, that means he knows what he is saying. The man wants to help us for free,” he said.

Laloko a former coach of The Gambia national team said he believes that one of the reasons why he thinks George was never given the job was that he is not the type that could be pushed around.

“So you may ask why did they not give him the job, why give it to someone that has a job already. Or is it because they think they cannot control him. Maikaba is not the right person to coach these young children; I am saying this categorically because I know him well.

“I think his selection is unfair. A coach who is in charge of a division one team cannot handle an U-17 team because he doesn’t have the wherewithal and the experience. I still maintain Maikaba will not have the time to do both jobs and even when he has the time, he may not handle it well. Teaching the children and at the same time senior players in a club can be confusing.

“But here in the country, employment is based on who you know. If you do not know somebody you don’t get anything. I agree a person can lobby for a thing, but a person who doesn’t lobby for things must be good. We want to appeal to the NFF to try and understand the issue on ground,” he stated.

SPORT: Roma close gap on Napoli after derby win

Roma's Italian midfielder Daniele De Rossi (top) celebrates with teammates at the end of the Italian Serie A football match AS Roma vs Lazio on November 18, 2017 at the Olympic stadium in Rome. AS Roma won 2-1.Filippo MONTEFORTE / AFP

Roma moved to within two points of Serie A leaders Napoli after squeezing past local rivals Lazio 2-1 on Sunday as Italy resumed domestic action following the World Cup disaster for the national team.

Eusebio Di Francesco's side moved to third in Serie A level on 30 points with Inter Milan ahead of Napoli's clash later with AC Milan after a hard-fought match decided by two goals in four second-half minutes from Diego Perotti and Radja Nainggolan.

“We showed great spirit, we are in wonderful form," said goalscorer Nainggolan.

The Belgium international was a doubt for the derby after picking up a groin injury during the international break but was the star of the show for Roma in midfield.

"I always want to help my teammates and I gave my all to be ready to play, as this is the kind of match you cannot miss."

Roma's fifth straight win saw them leapfrog Lazio, who drop down to fifth on 28 points after the derby defeat, ahead of Wednesday's trip to Atletico Madrid, where they could qualify for the Champions League knockout stages with a match to spare.

“This is a Roma side that is improving and has great belief," said coach Eusebio Di Francesco. "We've already turned our attentions to the game with Atletico Madrid.

"We want to stay up at the top for as long as possible and I think we’ve got the right mentality to do just that."

Dominant Roma looked set for a comprehensive victory when Perotti slotted home a 49th minute penalty and Belgium midfielder Nainggolan drilled home a fine low strike four minutes later.

However a Kostas Manolas handball, initially missed by referee Gianluca Rocchi but picked by the video assistant referee after protests from Lazio players, gave the away side a lifeline from the spot.

Ciro Immobile tucked away the penalty in the 72nd minute to make it 15 goals for the season.

Lazio pressed for an equaliser but Roma held out for a nervy three points that strengthened their claims to be a contender to Juventus' Serie A crown.

SPORT: Returning Pogba inspires Man Utd comeback win

Manchester United's French midfielder Paul Pogba (L) celebrates scoring their third goal during the English Premier League football match between Manchester United and Newcastle at Old Trafford in Manchester, north west England, on November 18, 2017. Oli SCARFF / AFP

Paul Pogba crowned his return from injury by scoring and laying on an equaliser for Anthony Martial as Manchester United hit back to beat Newcastle United 4-1 on Saturday.

Chris Smalling was also on the mark in the first half, while Romelu Lukaku ended a drought of seven games without a goal.

To cap a perfect afternoon for the home team, who restored the eight-point gap separating them from Premier League leaders Manchester City, Zlatan Ibrahimovic also enjoyed a 13-minute run-out as a substitute.

Jose Mourinho's men had to respond to a storming opening from the visitors, scoring twice in the closing minutes of the first half to cancel out Dwight Gayle's 14th-minute opener.

Pogba, back after over two months out with a hamstring injury, carved out a superb 37th-minute equaliser, taking a short pass from Antonio Valencia and beating Isaac Hayden with a neat sidestep.

The France international then delivered a perfect cross for fellow Frenchman Martial, who rose above DeAndre Yedlin to head an unstoppable effort past the stranded Rob Elliot.

The goalkeeper would be beaten by another header, deep in first-half injury time, as the visitors, rather unjustly, found themselves heading into the break a goal down.

After a left-wing corner had broken down, Ashley Young was allowed space 30 yards from goal to beat a defender and send over another excellent cross.

Smalling outjumped Florian Lejeune to power a header past Elliot at the back post.

And the first-half drama was still not over.

Another Newcastle counter-attack ended with David de Gea saving superbly from Hayden and after the rebound broke to Matt Ritchie, his shot was deflected just wide off Gayle's knee.

A second goal for Gayle would not have been unjust after the first-half display from Rafael Benitez's side, who took the lead with a devastating counter-attack.

Rashford intelligence
Gayle and Joselu had a hand in the right-wing move that ended with Yedlin crossing, United defender Victor Lindelof losing his footing and Gayle scoring clinically off the left-hand post.

It was the start of an impressive period for the visitors, who refused to be knocked out of their stride by a United side buoyed by the return of Pogba.

Soon after the goal, young winger Jacob Murphy broke upfield before cutting in and shooting tamely at De Gea.

Then Jonjo Shelvey's beautifully weighted through ball played Murphy through on goal, only for him to roll a shot narrowly wide of the far post.

They were misses that looked like they may prove costly as United grew into the game, even though the hosts hardly troubled Newcastle prior to the equaliser.

Thereafter, it looked like being a tough afternoon for Newcastle, with Martial threatening twice in the opening exchanges of the second half.

The first of those chances saw the Frenchman miskick completely from six yards, following a clever piece of play from Lukaku, although the miss would not prove too costly.

In the 54th minute, the three points appeared secure as Pogba marked a memorable comeback with a goal of his own.

Juan Mata's pass sent Lukaku sprinting into the area from the right flank and his far-post cross was headed down, selflessly and intelligently, by Rashford to present Pogba with the simplest of close-range finishes.

Newcastle still had something to offer, with Murphy's magnificent 25-yard shot being tipped over expertly by De Gea.

But after 70 minutes, Lukaku played a neat one-two with Mata, Ciaran Clark failed to intercept and the Belgian was able to take his time before launching a shot into the roof of the net.

SPORT: Lewandowski double puts Bayern six points clear

Bayern Munich's Polish striker Robert Lewandowski celebrates after the second goal for Munich during the German First division Bundesliga football match Bayern Munich vs FC Augsburg 1907 in the stadium in Munich, southern Germany, on November 18, 2017.<br />Christof STACHE / AFP

Robert Lewandowski reached 17 goals for Bayern Munich this season after a brace that left the Bundesliga leaders six points clear with a 3-0 thumping of Augsburg on Saturday.

Lewandowski underlined his status as the league's top scorer by netting either side of the break in Munich to leave him with 13 goals in 12 league games this season.

Bayern looked impressive with Lewandowski showing off his finishing skills after Arturo Vidal gave the hosts a deserved lead after 31 minutes at the Allianz Arena.

"In the first half, we didn't really move well enough in attack, therefore we had very few clear chances," said the Poland international, who has dyed his hair silver.

"However, we stayed patient and after the first goal it got a bit easier for us."

Vidal struck after the ball ricocheted around Augsburg's penalty area as Lewandowski and Mats Hummels failed to get shots away before the Chile midfielder hit the back of the net.

Lewandowski grabbed his first by firing home Vidal's pass just before the break, then grabbed his second on 49 minutes when he converted Joshua Kimmich's pinpoint cross.

The victory was a good warm-up for Wednesday's Champions League match at Anderlecht and increased Bayern's lead over second-placed RB Leipzig, who drew 2-2 at ten-man Bayer Leverkusen.

Leipzig held
Germany striker Timo Werner converted an early penalty, but the hosts equalised when Jamaica midfielder Leon Bailey got in behind the defence and fired home a minute before the break.

Leipzig were furious as the equaliser came even as their midfielder Naby Keita was down injured.

Emil Forsberg scored another spot-kick on 54 minutes to restore Leipzig's lead after Benjamin Henrichs was sent off for using his hand to save a shot on the line.

But a wonderful Kevin Volland volley with 16 minutes to go put Leverkusen level despite the numerical disadvantage. A draw was not the best result for Leipzig before Tuesday's crucial Champions League match at Monaco.

Striker Mark Uth rescued a point for fourth-placed Hoffenheim with a 91st-minute goal, converting a superb Serge Gnabry cross to seal a 1-1 draw at home to Eintracht Frankfurt, who are sixth.

Frankfurt had taken the lead when Kevin-Prince Boateng hit a super first-half solo effort, snapping up a stray pass and slamming home his shot from outside the area.

Cologne remain rooted to the bottom after their 1-0 defeat at mid-table Mainz, who took the lead with a controversial penalty which was converted by Daniel Brosinski.

Replays showed Mainz forward Pablo De Blasis had not been fouled, but the video assistant backed up the initial decision of referee Felix Brych.

Mainz played the last 20 minutes with 10 men after Italian defender Giulio Donati was sent off.

Wolfsburg extended their unbeaten run to nine games after a 3-1 win at home to Freiburg as Turkey midfielder Yunus Malli netted twice.

Borussia Dortmund stayed third despite suffering a third straight defeat on Friday by crashing to a 2-1 loss at VfB Stuttgart.

Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was suspended for disciplinary reasons and Stuttgart went ahead with five minutes gone when Chadrac Akolo scored after a mix up between Dortmund defender Marc Bartra and his goalkeeper Roman Burki.

Maximilian Philipp equalised for Borussia, but Josip Brekalo's shot through Burki's legs sealed Stuttgart's win, while Dortmund have dropped 14 points in just five league games.

SPORT: Suarez double stretches Barca's La Liga lead

Barcelona's Uruguayan forward Luis Suarez celebrates after scoring a goal during the Spanish league football match Leganes vs Barcelona at the Butarque stadium in Leganes on November 18, 2017. OSCAR DEL POZO / AFP

Luis Suarez ended a five-game goal drought with a double as Barcelona extended their lead at the top of La Liga with a flattering 3-0 win at Leganes on Saturday.

Barca now lead second-placed Valencia by seven points ahead of their trip to the Mestalla next weekend, with both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid 11 points adrift before they face off in the Madrid derby later on Saturday (1945 GMT).

However, two simple Suarez finishes from close range either side of half-time and Paulinho's late tap-in glossed over another under-par performance from Ernesto Valverde's men, who were again thankful to a fine display from goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

"The important thing was to win," Suarez told BeIN Sports Spain.

"We always try to play our best in every game but sometimes it is not possible."

Refreshed Suarez
Suarez was refreshed after sitting out international duty with Uruguay over the past fortnight and had the ball in the net after just four minutes, but Jordi Alba had already been flagged for offside as he supplied the cross for the former Liverpool striker.

Leganes have enjoyed a fine start to just their second ever season in the Spanish top flight and a repeat of the 5-0 thrashing Barca dished out on their visit to Butarque last season was never likely as the hosts went onto enjoy the better of the opening half.

"Perhaps 0-3 is a bit excessive. They played well enough for the gap between the teams to not be so great," said Barca boss Valverde.

The busy Nordin Ambrabat fired a shot over after a positive run at the Barca defence before Gabriel Pires also dragged an effort wide when well-placed at the edge of the box.

However, Leganes' good work in the opening half hour was undone by a goalkeeping error when Ivan Cuellar limply palmed Paco Alcacer's driven cross into the path of the grateful Suarez to smash home his first goal for a month.

"I wasn't anxious. The important thing was to feel good again and help the team," added Suarez.

Barca's joy was tempered moments later when Gerard Pique was booked for bringing down Amrabat meaning he will be suspended for next weekend's clash at Valencia.

Amrabat was the creator once more for Leganes' best chance before the break when he released Alexander Szymanowski inside the area, but the Argentine's curling effort was turned to safety by the in-form Ter Stegen.

The German goalkeeper was called into action again early in the second period when Leganes substitute Claudio Beauvue was too quick for the Barca defence only to fire straight at Ter Stegen.

In contrast, just as in the first half, Barca were ruthlessly efficient in front of goal to double their lead on the hour mark.

Lionel Messi's dinked pass released Alcacer and after Cuellar parried his first effort, Suarez drilled home the rebound for his second of the afternoon.

Barca rode their luck to hold out for a 12th clean sheet in their last 17 games as Ter Stegen saved one-on-one from Amrabat and Beauvue blasted well over when unmarked 10 yards out.

However, Barca piled more pressure on the chasing Atletico and Real ahead of the Madrid derby and rubbed salt into Leganes' wounds when Paulinho rolled into an empty net when a loose ball broke off Messi in stoppage time.

SPORT: West Bromwich Albion 0-4 Chelsea: Eden Hazard Shines as the Blues Ease Past Poor Baggies

Tony Pulis' position at West Brom looks increasingly under threat after Chelsea inflicted the joint-heaviest defeat of his near three-year reign at The Hawthorns.

A brace from Eden Hazard and efforts from Alvaro Morata and Marcos Alonso saw the Blues coast to a 4-0 success, their fourth successive triumph in the Premier League, at the venue where they clinched the title six months ago.

Pulis had said on Friday he would understand if he was axed following a run of poor recent results and this defeat, which took them to 11 games without a victory, was witnessed by Chinese owner Guochuan Lai and a home crowd that delivered their verdict with a loud chorus of 'Pulis out' at the end.

Pulis had used his programme notes to staunchly defend his record, referencing a trio of mid-table finishes and the Baggies' strong financial position.

For such a pivotal contest he restored Matt Phillips at right wing-back and things may have been different had Salomon Rondon, another recalled to the starting XI, stayed onside from the Scot's cross when he squeezed a header under Thibaut Courtois in the fifth minute.

He was marginally offside, though, and once Chelsea took control with the opener in the 17th minute they never looked back.

The first was instigated by Hazard, who moments earlier had received little sympathy from West Brom players and fans alike while laying injured. The Belgian rolled past Gareth Barry and rifled in a shot that Ben Foster could only push into Morata's path, with the Spaniard able to do the rest, much to a pumped-up Hazard's delight.

The roles were reversed for Chelsea's second six minutes later, which came after Hazard had been booked for clattering into Grzegorz Krychowiak. Cesc Fabregas rolled a pass into Morata and the forward, with his back to goal, sent a fine first-time flick through for Hazard with his instep that he was able to reach, rounding Foster to double the visitors' advantage.

Even allowing for Morata's brilliance, there was far too much space for Hazard to utilise and the third goal was even sloppier from a West Brom perspective.

Pulis' teams are renowned for their strength at set-pieces so he must have been fuming to see Alonso left all alone at the back post to convert Fabregas' free-kick.

With their team conceding three times in 21 minutes, some of those Albion fans that had not rushed out early at half-time were chanting 'Tony Pulis, get out of our club'.

His response at the start of the second half was to introduce the spirited Claudio Yacob for the ineffective Krychowiak and within minutes the new arrival was in the face of Fabregas and Morata.
He was irked by Fabregas being booked for diving when Gareth McAuley won the ball, although replays showed deeming it theatrical was harsh, with referee Jon Moss cautioning Rondon at the other end for the same crime.

Chelsea were in cruise control and could turn attention to the long midweek trip to Qarabag when Hazard added another in the 62nd minute.

Once more he was allowed a copious amount of space when Fabregas spotted him, and Hazard brought the ball down, moved inside Ahmed Hegazi and picked his spot to make it 4-0.

That was enough for some in The Hawthorrns as the stands started to empty to a smattering of 'Pulis out'.

It was a cry that got far louder just before a full-time whistle that may be the last Pulis hears as West Brom boss.

SPORT: Liverpool 3-0 Southampton: Salah double and Coutinho strike seal victory for Klopp's side

A virtuoso performance from Mohamed Salah ran Southampton ragged as his two goals inspired Liverpool's 3-0 win at Anfield and fired the Egyptian to the top of the Premier League scoring charts.
His summer arrival for £38million, at the time a club record, was questioned by critics after his disappointing spell at Chelsea but on this form he is looking an absolute bargain.

Both his first-half goals had a touch of class and his constant threat had visitors backpedalling for 80 minutes before his departure to a standing ovation - by which time Philippe Coutinho had added the third goal.

Having edged one ahead of the likes of Harry Kane and Sergio Aguero, both strikers, Salah is racking up some impressive numbers.

The 25-year-old's double took him to nine goals in his first 12 Premier League matches, breaking the club's previous best held by Robbie Fowler - the man affectionately hailed as God by the Kop for his goal-scoring exploits.
Salah's overall statistics are equally impressive with 14 goals, all from open play, in 18 matches and three assists. Last season Philippe Coutinho was the club's leading scorer with 14.

And this from a winger whose finishing has, at times this season, still been criticised.

But Liverpool are far from a one-man team as with Salah on one wing, the equally-pacy Sadio Mane on the other, Roberto Firmino running the channels as the nominal centre-forward and Coutinho pulling the strings in midfield Jurgen Klopp's team have all the ingredients to be devastating.

As they approach a critical part of the season everything appears to finally be aligning for Liverpool having overcome most of their injury problems - albeit defender Joel Matip missed this game with a thigh problem - with the fit-again Adam Lallana not even able to make the bench against his former side.

Many inside Anfield would have been closely watching Saints centre-back Virgil van Dijk, the man Klopp believes is the missing link for his defence, but it quickly became apparent there was more compelling action on Liverpool's flanks.

The defender's mis-control almost put Trent Alexander-Arnold in for the first goal early on before Salah, who had already volleyed wastefully wide, ended his club's 459-minute goal drought against Southampton with a superb curling effort from Georginio Wijnaldum's lay-off just past the half-hour.
His second was just as brilliant. Van Dijk half-heartedly and somewhat inexplicably stepped forward with Coutinho on the ball and the Brazil international's outside-of-the-foot pass allowed Salah to run in behind and clip past Fraser Forster.

Salah continued to torment after the break with one scintillating counter-attack messed up by Alberto Moreno's clumsiness in the penalty area.

Coutinho stabbed wide a good chance before making amends by smashing home Firmino's parried shot in the 68th minute.

Southampton rarely looked like preventing Liverpool keeping a fifth clean sheet in six home league matches, which almost went unnoticed in the celebration of their exhilarating attacking play.
