Champions League: 5 Premier League teams qualified for the UCL Last 16: here’s who they may face

For the first time in history, five Premier League teams qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League; these are their likely opponents.

For the first time in the competition’s history, all five English teams have qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League.

Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham defied all odds to emerge as leaders of their group, in place of reigning champions Real Madrid, with a game to spare. Despite losing to Shakhtar Donetsk in their final group game, Manchester City also qualified top of their group.

Liverpool’s heavy 7–0 win over Spartak Moscow and Manchester United’s comeback victory over CSKA Moscow ensured both teams finished as group leaders.

Chelsea’s head-to-head record against Roma means that Antonio Conte’s side are the only English team to finish as group runners-up, despite finishing level on 11 points with the Italian side.

As usual, clubs which finished first in their groups will be seeded and drawn against a second-placed team in the knockout stages.

Teams from the same country, or from the same group, cannot be drawn against each other.

Third-placed teams move into the Europa League.

Fourth-placed teams, well, they go home to concentrate on local championships.

While Chelsea will now be wary of facing strong opposition, the other English sides also stand a chance of facing one of the stronger sides who finished second in their groups, such as Real Madrid, Bayern and Juventus.
