#EndSARS: 2 Super Eagles players narrate ordeals in hands of SARS

Super Eagles of Nigeria with FIFA World Cup trophy

Two Super Eagles stars have added their voices to the #EndSARS campaign.

Two Super Eagles stars have narrated their ordeals in the hands of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigerian Police Force joining thousands of other Nigerians to call for the government to scrap the unit.

Young Nigerians for over a week have made the #EndSARS hashtag a trending item on social media while several rallies have held in major cities across the country.

Adding their voices to the cause, two Super Eagles stars have anonymously narrated incidences of abuse they received from the notorious unit.

Ugly SARS Experiences

One of the players based in Italy revealed that he was abused in 2013 just after arriving in Lagos ahead of the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil.

I arrived in Nigeria around 11:50 pm from my base in Italy to honour a national team invitation in 2013. But when we got to Apple Junction just off the Oshodi-Mile 2 Expressway on the way to my house some minutes past midnight, we were stopped by SARS for a routine search,” Complete Sports quote the player.

I wasn’t worried initially until one of the (SARS) members asked me where I got the money to buy the expensive necklace I had on and I replied that I was a footballer and that I bought it from my base in Europe.

“I was asked to step out of the car before I could identify myself to the officer that I was a Nigerian footballer in town for a national assignment. I was hit with a gun and he threatened to lock me up yelling ‘You be Ronaldo? We don’t know you.'

The player further revealed that he was held by SARS for two hours and was only released after they confirmed his name on Google.

The second player in the report was based in Russia when he had an ugly encounter with SARS in 2016. According to the player, he was stopped around Ikeja Under Bridge after he was called up for a Super Eagles game.

The fact that I smiled at the question earned me the beating of my life that I thought I was going to die,” said the player who Complete Sports recognise as a midfielder and a former Golden Eaglets star who was in the Super Eagles squad to the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

He further revealed that the SARS men deflated his tyres with gunshots and that he was treated like a criminal.
