Policeman shoots commercial driver to death at checkpoint

Woman bites electricity workers for disconnecting her light

A 28-year-old trader, Kemi Shopade, who allegedly assaulted two Ikeja Electric workers that wanted to disconnect her electricity wire, on Wednesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

Shopade, resident of Alaguntan, Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos, is being tried for conspiracy and assault.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Awase, said that the accused committed the offences on Nov. 24, at her residence.

Awase said that the accused and two others, who had yet to be apprehended, assaulted two workers of Ikeja Electric — Mr John Oluwole and Mr Uwaoman Ibiam.

“The accused beat up and bit the complainants while performing their duty,” he said.

He said that the complainants disconnected the electricity supply of the accused over unpaid electricity bills from January.

“The accused, who had not paid for electricity since the beginning of the year, descended on the complainants when they disconnected her power supply.

“The two other men who are still at large joined her in beating the complainants, and in the process, the accused bit the complainants.

“The case was reported to the police and the accused was arrested,” the prosecutor said.

The offences contravened Sections 174 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 174 prescribes three years jail term for a person guilty of assault.

The accused, however, pleaded innocence of the offences and was granted bail in the sum of N20,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The Magistrate, Mr J.A. Adigun, said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

He adjourned the case until Jan. 5, for mention.

JUST IN: 20 vehicles burnt as tanker explodes in FESTAC

Generator fumes kill two fashion designers in Edo

The bodies of two middle-aged women have been recovered in a lock-up shop in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Johnson Kokumo, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent on the telephone, said that the women died of suspected generator fumes.

“It is true; the story is correct. They died of generator fumes,” Kokumo said.

It was gathered that one of the deceased, said to be a fashion designer and the owner of the shop, Uju Muobuikwu, had invited her, the other victim, to assist her at the shop located on Second East Circular road.

It was also gathered that Muobuikwu had turned on a generator to enable her carry out the task throughout the night and deliver the clothes to her customer in time.

Her brother, Chukwudi, said that he had earlier received a call from his sister on Monday but could not reach her subsequently.

He said, “I got a call from my sister at about 2pm when she complained that her friend was getting weak. I told her to give her anointing oil.

“Minutes later, I put a call to her mobile phone to know the situation of things but she did not pick my call. So, I came here this morning and we invited the police to force the door open and that was it.”

The police commissioner explained that preliminary investigations revealed that the victims inhaled the toxic fumes from the generator.

He, however, said that the command would carry out an enlightenment campaign on the health hazards inherent in the indoor use of generator.

Kokumo explained, “I think they were fashion designers who must have been working all night to, probably, meet up with the demands of their customers this Yuletide.

“Maybe they (deceased) had a lot of things to get done for their customers and slept where the generator was on. So, they eventually died of the fumes of the generator. I think they did not know.”

“We will embark on public enlightenment to enlighten members of the public that it is dangerous to the health.”

'My Daddy is responsible for my pregnancy': 10-year-old girl says

A 10-year-old girl (name withheld) has said that her dad is responsible for her pregnancy.

As the case came up before the Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, the suspect, Kenneth Abuya, was granted bail in the sum of N500,000.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. B.O. Osunsanmi, also directed that Abuya should produce two sureties in like sum.

She ordered that the sureties must be property owners in Lagos State and should have evidence of tax payment to the state government.

Osunsanmi said she needed advice from the state Director of Public Prosecutions.

The magistrate adjourned the case until February 2, 2018 for mention.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Abuya, a resident of Idimu Road, Egbeda, Lagos, is standing trial on a count of defilement.

‎‎The prosecutor, Mr. Simeon Imhonwa, said the accused regularly had sexual intercourse with the minor at his residence.

“The accused forcefully had carnal knowledge of his child on November 29 at his residence and threatened to kill her if she told anyone about the crime,’’ Imhonwa said.

“The accused had been defiling the girl before he was apprehended.

“The victim’s mother reported the case to the police after their daughter narrated her ordeal to her,” he said.

‎The offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015, according to the prosecutor.

‎The accused, however, pleaded not guilty. (NAN)

'If I die, look for me at Ajiwe Police Station' - Actress April Joju Muse cries out after police harass her

SHOCKING: Man sells daughter to ‘bury’ mother-in-law

A 37-year-old man, Kingsley Oriaku, has been arrested by the police for selling his one-year-old daughter, Nkechi, for N190, 000 to bury his mother-in-law.

It was gathered that the suspect also abducted and sold his neighbour’s seven-year-old kid for N120,000.

Oriaku reportedly sold both kids at a fake Orphanage Home in Abia State.

He told his neighbour that he wanted to buy something for the child before fleeing with him.

Police said the suspect admitted to the crime, adding that he claimed he was confused and frustrated.

In his confessional statement, Oriaku said: “I know that what I did was not good but then I was confused and frustrated.

“My wife is the first and only daughter and when her mother died sometime in September my in-laws gave me an outrageous bill.

“Not knowing what to do, I took my daughter and handed her over to the owner of an orphanage home. I got to know her through one of my friends. She told me that she runs an orphanage and that she buys children who do not have parents.

“I remembered her when I had problem with raising money for my in-law’s burial.

“I later had problem with my wife when she found out that I left town with our child. She reported me to the police at Meiran. At the station, I admitted selling off our daughter. We later settled the matter between us.

“Two days later, I tricked my neighbour’s son, Gabriel with sweet, into following me out one evening. Immediately we left our house at Meiran, I headed to the motor park where I boarded a mid-night vehicle to Abia.

“I called the owner of the orphanage before I left Lagos with my neighbour’s son. We had agreed that she would pay me N190,000 but surprisingly when I got to Umuahia, Abia State, she said she can only pay me N120,000 for the boy.”

Lagos State Police Commissioner, Imohimi Edgal, said it was a clear case of abduction and child theft, adding that the police followed a report of missing child filed by one Olabisi Yanga in October.

Anthony Obayomi, a fresh graduate of the University of Lagos, on Sunday won the $10,000 prize money for the best submission for Photography Portfolio Review at the 2017 Lagos Photo Festival.

Metro: Group demands justice over Bilyamin’s death

• Counsels womenfolk on how to handle delicate domestic issues

A non-governmental organisation, Attitude and Character Change Initiative (ACCHI), Nigeria, has urged Federal Government to discharge justice in the case of Bilyamin Muhammed Bello, who was allegedly killed by his wife, Maryam Sanda.

In a statement, the founder of ACCHI, Mrs. Saada Baba Mohammed described Maryam’s action as un-Islamic, noting that the idea of killing her spouse was not part of the culture of the Northern people.According to ACCHI founder, the wife could have averted the incident that led to her husband death. .

“You do not make life, so, you cannot take it. Life is sacred.”She said that one of the ways to address such matter was for Maryam to have consulted their parents or guardians about their disagreement.

“There was nothing wrong whatsoever in briefing his (Bilyamin) parents or to take a decision to either stay or opt out of the marriage.

“Another thing she could have done was to sit her husband down and counsel him and probably, give him her terms and conditions to decide if he wanted his first wife to return to his home. That was logical and rational enough for a woman.

On the option of divorce regarding the situation, she said, “It is acceptable if there are tangible reasons for divorce. Don’t be shameful to seek divorce. Divorce is permitted and legal in Islam just as marriage is allowed.”

On allegations of infidelity, she said Maryam could have presented valid proofs to Bilyamin’s parents and her (Maryam) parents, too. “There are women, who have caught their husbands in the act and still keep the marriage. Islam has adequate provisions for addressing matters of this nature. Killing is not near the solution at all,” Mrs. Mohammed said.

She advised women to be prepared for the time when men would be ‘outrageously’ outnumbered by women. “We are very close to that time now.” She said it is not a misnomer for a man to marry two wives especially in the North. It’s permitted in Islam, but the religion has also prescribed how to ask for justice.

Metro: Great Success Academy pupils visit The Guardian

Great Success Academy

Members of staff and students of Great Success Academy, Igbesa, Ado-Odo, Ogun State have been told to cherish learning outside the school environment because such outside-school knowledge acquisition will boost their confidence.

The school Proprietor, Mr. John Ogheneruemu Ejejigbe said this when the staff and students of the school paid a courtesy visit to The Guardian’s corporate office, Rutam House.

The students were shown around the company’s premises and taught different stages and processes involved in newspaper production from newsgathering to printing and distribution.

Ejejigbe said “as a former pressman, who knew the importance of the media in the society, we decided to come to The Guardian so that the children could practically learn some of the things we tell them and probably set in motion a future in newspaper industry. Some of them would want to consider a career in journalism. That was why we came up with the idea, and The Guardian readily obliged us.

“As a matter of fact, The Guardian being an agent of truth, was the only place that came to my mind that we must visit.”He advised other schools as well as parents to include visiting media houses, at least, once in a year.“Information is a win-win situation for both the parents and the students,” he said.

Metro: Gunmen kill pastor in Ikorodu, police vow to arrest clergymen who fail to seek protection at vigils

Edgal Imohimi

The Lagos State Police Command has begun investigation into the killing of the pastor of Redeemed Christian Church of God, Fingers of God Parish; Victor Kanayo. He was killed yesterday morning around 7 :00 a.m. by unknown gunmen in Offin, Igbogbo area of Ikorodu.

Of particular interest to police is the skull-tattoo found on the late pastor’s body. The police were investigating this to unravel the motive behind his killing. Detectives actually want to probe whether he was a member of a cult group.

A statement from the Command spokesman, Chike Oti, a Superintendent of Police (SP) said the command has made a couple of arrests and suspects were being questioned with a view to discovering the perpetrators of the crime. He said the Commissioner of Police Lagos State command, Mr. Imohimi Edgal had also dispatched a team of crack detectives to unravel those behind the murder and dig into the past of the victim.

In a related development, Edgal has vowed to arrest any pastor or Iman , who irganises a vigil in the area without seeking police protection.“I will arrest, charge with murder any pastor in whose church ritualists attack and kill worshippers at vigils. Henceforth, no pastor should organise a vigil in Ikorodu without adequate security arrangement. Do not organise any vigil if you cannot protect the lives of the people who attend…”.

Edgal warned yesterday at a meeting held at the palace of the Ikorodu monarch, Oba Abdulrasheed Shotobi, following the resumed ritual killings by suspected murderers in the area.

Edgal said most ritual killings happened in church premises, after pastors would have concluded their prayers and left, leaving women and children vulnerable.

According to Edgal, the police was soliciting the collaboration of all interest groups in Ikorodu to ensure the murderers do not have a field day.He said: “Churches and mosques should not have vigils in isolated locations. If you must hold vigils, put structures in place to protect your worshippers. If I hear that anybody is murdered in any church or mosque, I will arrest the pastor or Imam and charge him or her to court for murder.”

Decrying the bail granted five out of seven suspected key members of the ritual gang by the court last week, Edgal expressed worry that the suspects could wreak havoc if checks were not put in place.

To achieve that, Edgal announced a curfew between 1.00am and 4.00am across the district. He urged the traditional ruler to prevail on his chiefs and youths to commence patrol and ignite bonfires to wade off the killers.

Metro: RRS recovers graduate’s valuables from ‘one chance’ robbers

Rapid Response Squad

Men of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command have recovered valuables stolen from a 20-year-old Liberty Whitney.

On her way from school at about 9.30pm on Sunday 1 November 19 ,the International Relations graduate from Lead City University, Ibadan, boarded an unmarked Danfo public bus from Oshodi to Mile 2. She was the only passenger in the vehicle at the time she boarded.

A few minutes after leaving the bus stop, more passengers came on board and the bus was left with two empty seats. On getting to Rainbow Bus Stop around Mile 2, two men boarded the bus and that was when pandemonium struck.

According to Whitney,  “The bus was moving slowly to pick passengers at Cele Bus Stop when two guys in white native attires, having two guns each, pointing at us while asking that we remained calm and did as we were told.”

While other passengers were screaming and jumping down from the bus, she was held down by a man that had joined the bus earlier.Unknown to others, the man was a member of the gang. She said when she made another attempt to jump , one of the robbers, brandished a gun in her face with threat of getting shot if she failed to comply.

“One of them asked me for my phone, bag and money and when I was reluctant, he hit me on my neck, close to my chest with the butt of his gun . I couldn’t breathe well for some minutes. I handed over all I had with me instantly. They were my travelling bag, polythene bag, laptop, and phone, chargers and school certificates.

“After then, I was allowed to jump down from the vehicle. Minutes later, I heard a gunshot and a guy was thrown out of the bus. He had been shot . He hung on the back of the bus. I didn’t know why he did that though, but it was at this point that RRS men chased the vehicle with a motorcycles. The robbers shot several times into the air but the policemen went after them.”

Whitney said she followed the bus and the police at a reasonable distance on a bike until the robbers stopped and ran away. She was able to get her valuables and documents back except for her phone that the robbers took with them.

It was after she was calm that she realised that the man that had been shot and clung to the back of the bus was the driver. He was fighting for his bus, which was his only source of livelihood. The driver died on Thursday, November 23, at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja. He died of the gunshot wound he sustained at the hands of the robbers, the police said.

The Lagos State Police PRO, Chike Oti, while confirming the incident explained that investigations were on to arrest the robbers. He, however , advised that people should not drag valuables with robbers especially when they are armed. The case has been transferred to SCID, Panti for further investigations.
